Turban Präzipress

Just trying to figure out what really matters in the manufacture of a good vs not-so-good press.
I think what really matters is the fact that the high quality presses have much better fit and finish. I enjoy using nicely made equipment and some day I may get around to buying one myself

Rereading this thread, it occurred to me that I have the means to do a little testing of my presses for how square the top of the thread adapter is to the top of the ram. I have a depth mic. I would guess that the thread adapter would be pretty square, threads to top, because of the way that it is likely to be produced, all in one setup on a CNC turning center. Perhaps some of you have the same tool and can report on what you find.

In the old days I did these inspections with classical methods on a granite inspection plate, later on we just ran them on a CMM. It isn't easy but if you are stubborn and have the tools it can be done.

Boyd, take the press apart. Completely.

In your lathe, turn a mandrel that is what we call a wringing fit on the ram channel in the presses body. Then, simply place an indicator on the face of the press insert check for runout. Of course, you must be careful not to disturb the mandrel in the chuck.

or, you could thread a piece that the insert will screw onto, with a shoulder to bump against. Then place an indicator on the ID of ram channel and check for runout.
