Tupperware Party for My Plain Jane

I've got my sweet little .20 "Plain Jane" that has caused the demise of several hundred ground squirrels this spring and summer. She's been set up in this 40X rimfire stock that is pretty durned sweet for the bench and even my tri-pod that I usually shoot squirrels from. I've been wanting to do something a little different though for using her as a carry rifle for coyote calling and such.
I've got a few other 700 stocks sitting around including one of the cheap and sleazy Remington Brand tupper-ware type.

I spent a few hours in front of the tube opening up the barrel channel for the #6 sporter contour --Remage Nut Barrel that I got from Pac Nor. The channel was pretty easy, -- the nut region a little more time consuming. For what it's worth, you can fit a #6 in these factory stocks with no problem if you're careful.

With this one being of a more slender design, it is easier an more ergonomic to wrap my hand around the body of the rifle. I especially like being able to stick my thumb through the gap provided by two piece bases.

This rifle spent some time in this stock back when it was a 222, and actually shot very well in it. One thing ya can say about these stocks is "They may be cheap, but they sure are -- cheap."

While I've got the other one off, I may get the gumption to cut out the mag well so that I can make a repeater out of it. Also after practicing on this one, I may convert the spare Boyds Laminate stock that I've got. It would be a lot classier than this sleazy thing. jd

oh JD..you took your girl out and sullied her. Tossed her to the vermin and dressed her in a cheap mini-skirt. I am appalled. :(

Don't worry Parker, she'll be able to rake the hay out of her hair an show up for work in the morning. Sometimes the lady is a tramp.:p jd

That is an Underwood and is quite old. Some of the really old ones go for $$$$$$. So how old is it?
That keyboard is the Underwood Standard #3, 16" model. As I recall, it's late twenties, early thirty's vintage. Function is fine, but it's due for a new ink cartridge.:p jd

That was before you could buy the whole thing cheaper than the ink!

I thought about doing this - thought I would put in pillars/bed and fill that forend with something to stiffen it up if I did.

I'm gonna shoot it before I do anything like that. As I mentioned, I've had this action in this stock with a 222 barrel, and was surprised at how well it shot. I've got the barrel free floating now except for very light pressure by the v-blocks at the very end of the stock. jd

You may remember that I PM'd you about your stock some time back. That 40x is one of my favorites. They are not light tho.

Look into doing your Boyd's or, if you're feeling flush, grab a McMillan... It'll certainly fit that little blaster better than the el-cheapo will.

Good luck with it.

A friend and I did that 1 time, worked pretty decent. Friend ran a ball mill down the forearm and back thru the magazine area, cutting a channel on each side of the bottom of the fore end. Wish i had pictures, think it was 5/16" channels cut. We form fitted a 1/4" steel rod to fit either side and down thru the fore end.

We put bedding compound in the milled area, pushed the rods in, cleaned it up a bit before it set up. Actually worked out good. Weight didn't increase that much.

Thanks for that info. I thought of using a 3/8 threaded rod to do that but hadn’t though of milling the forend. I thought of drilling it from the front. The mill idea sounds better. I’m not sure what to use to fill the forend as seems you’d need enough that devcon would be more than I’d want to spend on it. Mabie i don’t need to fill the whole thing
