Tuner on a 6BR or Dasher

My 6mm F class barrels are usually short and thick (well 28" anyway). I have won another 6mm barrel which is lighter than I usually use but is 30" long. I'm thinking of putting a tuner on it. Tuners are very common here in Australia on 308 target rifles. Has anyone here run tuners on a 6BR or Dasher?
I,ll let people know how it goes when it gets chambered.

Try it without a tuner first and you may be surprised how good it shoots. If a 6 won't shoot with the usual loads then adding a tuner to a bad barrel may be throwing good money to bad anyways.

In the short range game, I know of a fellow who does his own work, who had accumulated several barrels that did not shoot competitively, that he fitted with simple tuners. All but one showed improvement with the tuner, and he thought that he may have done better with it with a different bullet. Bottom line, it may be the less than perfect barrels that get the most help form a tuner. Of course these were short 6PPC barrels, so there may be a difference with the longer one that you have.

I,m not sure of how this barrel shoots yet as its yet to be chambered. I do have weight to spare and was thinking it might be worth a try, being able to adjust settings if needed to suit different climate conditions.

I have a Dasher in a fully trued Rem 700, heavy lug, trigger, bedded, Krieger bbl, etc. that shoots well but is not quite competitive - usually in the 3s or 4s. Last resort, had a tuner installed. It continues to shoot about the same. So, all a tuner might possibly do is help you find the sweet spot, where it is at its best. Mine was probably at its best before the tuner was put on.

I've been using my own tuners on my short range and long range barrel's for years. I even have a tuner/brake I'm working with now. Every BR barrel I've screwed on since 07' has one installed...I'd hate to count them all up. Anyway, they certainly give a wider tune window than barrel's without, that is good barrel's. Bad barrel's can't be helped. Nor can great barrel's. In the short range game, a tuner can be tweaked at the bench while you watch groups form on the target. I can tell if there's too much vertical, not enough, or even if the individual holes look ragged. Fine tuning with the tuner can turn a so so day into a winner. Not so much in the long range game. I do adjust them sometimes during the sighting period as the target is pulled and marked, but its just to take out vertical.

It sounds like if nothing else a tuner would be a great tool for the long range game. Being able to take out vertical is huge in long range shooting, correct?? I am going to put one on a 6br barrel this winter. I will make it all myself so no big loss if it doesn't work out. Lee

I love em Lee, but they are much more of an aid in the short range game. It's a huge benefit to see your holes on target as opposed to having your target pulled and spotted. In the matches I attend, the sight in periods aren't long enough to allow you to fine tune.

I now have 4 barrels which are potential candidates for a tuner.

The 6BR will be 27" long,HV .970" at muzzle straight taper. (short/stiff)

6 Dasher 31" long .900" at muzzle Palma taper (long/whippy)

The 308 will be 31" long 1.200" at breach, .900" at the muzzle straight taper(long/whippy)

and a 284 29" long 1.100" at muzzle (fairly stiff).

The tuners I am looking at are 6 oz standard, but available up to 9 oz grams or more. What weight tuner would I be looking at for these barrels?

I'm not sure what handle he goes by these days but, you might search for posts by "Lynn", or "Kay" here and at benchrest central. He's been using tuners on his long range rifles for a couple years now. I believe he has Dasher's, 300 Weatherby Imp. and some others. If you can find him, he can give you some additional insight.
