5 STAR MUZZLE BRAKE

Retail price of $109.00 (Includes both the 5 Star brake and trailing locking nut).

The 5 Star Muzzle break is bored for a 6mm bullet clearance. Please note if you want to shoot a larger caliber, you need to increase the exit hole diameter accordingly. We can do this at Superior Shooting Systems for you if you call and ask. 806-323-9488

I have shot a multitude of muzzle brakes and have a list of certain desired results.
1. Recoil reduction is certainly important but certainly not the only parameter of importance.
2. The ability to stay on target is very high on my list – which will require an asymmetrical design.
3. Some tuneability of the brake is also desirable and while this is not designed as a muzzle tuner, the ability to turn a complete revolution either in or out in direction from muzzle flush to the back of the first port often yields a smaller group.
4. Being able to comfortably use this brake with either a set of ear plugs or a set of ear muffs is important. Brakes which blow the gas to the rear require me to use both plugs and muffs.
5. A brake which will conform to the International Benchrest Shooters rules is always a plus.
6. A brake whose ports are positioned so as not to disturb the ground in front (no dirt blown on myself or a competitor next door).
7. While I am completely in agreement that an effective brake for a 40 gr capacity case p only needs 3 or 4 sets of ports to be very effective, a 90 grain capacity case will effectively utilize all 5 sets of ports. If desired you can machine off a complete set of ports and still have an effective and good looking brake.
8. Thread diameters of smaller than 5/8” are suspect in my opinion for bores larger than 6mm. The 5 Star brake is a ¾ x24 tpi design. Threaded adapter sleeves in 5/8 x 24 tpi are available if you already have your muzzle threaded as such.

The 5 Star brake fits all of the 8 parameters outlined above. It contains 5 star shaped (5 ports each) exit angled muzzle blast portals along with an asymmetrical design.
The 5 Star expansion chamber design efficiently collects and disperses expanding gas as opposed to damming them up. This is an important design difference versus others (4 Star/Bastard designs).
It is supplied with a trailing locking nut so as to facilitate brake placement for tuneability. When properly installed will allow complete revolutions either way from flush.

Threads are ¾ x 24 tpi so bore diameters up thru .375 caliber have enough body wall thickness for peace of mind.

5/8 x 24 TPI (thread per inch) threaded adapters are an additional $10 each.
If you have a 5/8 x24 TPI on your barrel, you will need one of these threaded adapters for the muzzle break to fit if you are not using a trailing locking nut. If you use the trailing locking nut you will need 2 adapters (one for the muzzle break and one for the trailing locking nut). To use both the muzzle break and the trailing locking nut you will need about 1.25 inches of threaded length on the end of the barrel.

All parts are made from 416 stainless.

Thanks for the post...
We have had stellar results in tuning the barrel to the load being shot. Shoot 3 shots and then move a out a complete revolution. Look for the round grouping then adjust bullet seating depth.

Hi Mr. Tubb! Big fan!!! Yah, I need to order mine. Probably today. I have to go talk to my machinist to see if he can do the threads. My 243 would really do well with a brake even though I cannot stand them because they are so loud!!!

@DTubb can I send the barrel to you for threading? If so, how long would that take?

The design of the 5 star brake makes sense and I like the concept so I just ordered it to test against my Area 419 Sidewinder on a 300 Norma Mag Improved. Barrel is already threaded 3/4"-24 so it will be an easy swap. Also ordeded his duo 700 firing pin springs to try out on a couple other rifles. Looking forward to seeing how it performs :)

@DTubb What is the function of the side ports being angled up and down as opposed to straight out? Nice looking brake btw and I always appreciate the design ideas and thought that you put into your products.

The ports venting gas at 10 oclock (ish) are not in alignment with the opposite side (ports). This is done to help facilitate controlling the high/left recoil impulse imparted from the recoil of right hand twist barrels.. it helps you stay closer to the aimpoint during recoil.
Look at the picture of the flour/air blast. If you look closely you can see the angle is slight differently from the 2 oclock to the 10 oclock exit ports.

No brakes here for anything less than SAUM. But I'm really good at installing 1" decelerator pads.

It can be self timed and also used as a tuner. You may need a little bit longer tenon though. You definitely want a 3/4 direct thread. The 5/8 adapter didn’t leave any room for tuning or the jam nut.

I’ve used an APA LB and an Area419 Hellfire. I prefer the Tubb brake over those proven performers. It seems just as effective at mitigating recoil and does not punish the shooter with concussion.
