Tubb Recoil Lug

I just bought a Krieger Heavy finished barrel threaded for a Remington 700 SAUM Action. The man I bought it from said it was fitted for a Tubb lug. I have been looking on internet for a new one. Midway USA shows that they are discontinued and the Tubb website doesn't even show them on there website. Does anyone know where I might find a new one. Or if I can't find a new one what other brand I might use in place of a Tubb Lug that would be the same thickness. Not wanting to have to cut threads off and shorten barrel.

Call David on Monday and ask would be my best advice.......

Sorry i can`t be of more help.

Phil.

Careful measurement of your action and new barrel will yeild the exact thickness the recoil lug needs to be for all the dimensions to work out. If you are not familiar with rebarrelling the spreadsheet i have linked or others you find on the web can help. A surface grinder can get the lug to the exact thickness you need.

alternately you can get a thicker lug and set the barrel tennon back the appropriate amount to make everything simpatico.....

Either way if you are any kind of lucky you can make it all work but understand when you change one dimension on the barrel/action combination it affects other aspects - headspace, bolt nose clearance, where ther barrel makings are indexed etc.

If you change one dimension, all the others need alteration if you need to hold specific tolerances (such as minimum headspace or .005" bolt clearance)

Ok skinj1 I thank you for the information. I'm just learning about all of this and it's my first rifle build. I appreciate all the info I can get! I just want to do it right. Thank you very much!

As far as I know they were discontinued quite a while back. I have a new one sitting in my bin (Brownells #840-700-102) in stainless I will probably never use. The Tubb I have is .350" thick although I've seen some referenced to be as thick as .375". Badger was next thickest I believe at .313".

Edit: I spoke with Brownells and verified #840-700-102 was supplied by Superior Shooting Systems/David Tubb. They could not say if it was a special lug supplied to them by Tubb in a thinner configuration than what Tubb marketed directly.

I have sent the guy I bought the barrel from a email and a reply on here hoping he will get back in touch with me. I'm hoping he still has the Tubb Lug. But if he don't I would sure buy the one you have if you are not going to use it. I appreciate the help to.

Thanks
Jeff

The Midway site has them discontinued but says thickness is 0.369 to 0.370

Here is an archived image of the Tubb site,

Ptg has made a wide variety of thicknesses lugs....again measurement will equal what he needs thickness wise for his action and this is a part that will affect the headspace someasure the dang thing....

Hey JB,
If all else fails, try to contact Darrel Holland at Holland Rifles. If he is not there, his wife ( Rosita I think) is very knowledgable and helpful

Ok men I appreciate your help. I'm taking it over to gunsmith this afternoon where he can take old barrel off and screw new barrel on and then measure. Thanks for all the help!

Standard Rem 700 lugs measure about .187.
The Holland Lug is .25 or .30

If you have a caliper and piece of virgin brass you can thread barrel to your receiver and measure the gap from receiver shoulder to barrel shank shoulder. On the 700 you can control headspace with the recoil lug thickness.

If you have a Go Gauge, and want minimum oal chamber, thread the barrel until you can't close the action on the Go Gauge; then back off like 1/8th turn until the gauge allows closure with minimal or no force.

Can use virgin brass as a substitute IF you can gauge the oal of the unfired case. A Wilson Case Gauge or RCBS Precision Mic will work for this.

Idea is you can see and measure the gap with your caliper and then KNOW what lug thickness you need. Might want to have it custom ground at a machine shop. Could also find some 1-1/16 ID washers and stack them in front of a standard 700 lug to verify your lug dimension.

You have no idea what your chamber dimensions are. OAL is the critical factor to accuracy, imnsho. If you tune your lug to the chamber oal you want, you will see better performance than just using a Tubb Lug. Maybe the Tubb Lug needs .0025 ground from it? Maybe you will need chamber to be throated?

No big deal to make your rifle work, but worth looking at if you want it to perform. Good luck!

Men I have found one that will work. From receiver shoulder to barrel shank shoulder it is .360 and I have one coming that is .366. I thank each and everyone of you for your input to help me on here. I have been shooting all my life but have never had a rifle fine tuned. Hopefully thru this website and guys like yourself I can learn more about how to make my rifles shoot. I appreciate each of you.
Thanks
Jeff
