Tubb firing pin spring binding up

Never used one of the Tubb springs before but I just worked over a rifle for a customer and wanted to try one. Bought the long action spring (2 shorter springs with the washer in the middle) obviously for a Rem L/A. The problem now is that the springs are compressed so tightly that they bow and deform making they grind on the ID of the bolt body. Obviously, screwing the firing pin performance as well. Is this something anyone's had issues/experience with?

Following. I've only heard good things about them and they make sense to me, but like you, I've not tried them yet and would like to know more. Thanks for posting this.

I played with and tested one when they first came out. It got removed and thrown into the parts (junk) bin. Too long ago so I can’t remember all the reasons I didn’t like them. Binding and drag was the main reason I believe. There are some that do like them but I did not. There was a discussion on them years ago at BRC so you might go search there and see what you can find.

Take this for what it's worth but the last bolt I sent to Carlsbad to have bushed had a Tubb firing pin spring in it. Carlsbad did not recommend leaving the Tubb spring in it and replaced it with a new standard spring and turned down the tip diameter to precisely match the bushing. I respect his opinion and feel confident I made the right choice.

I talked to a guy at Tubb and wasn’t a big fan of what he said. First it was that the spring hasn’t been compressed enough yet (I thought their deal was that their springs weren’t supposed to lose performance…). Second he said to put grease on it. I don’t want grease on my firing pin spring! Guess this one is going in the spare parts box. I need a better spring as the stock one does the same thing so maybe I’ll give Gre-Tan’s a try unless y’all have a lead on a better option.

Dusty, is that the deal they call the “J” lock? If so then yes it does. Should I get one from PTG or try the Gre-Tan combo? I’ll see what’s available since the gun is complete and I’d like to get it back to the customer.

The J lock pin is smaller in diameter in front of the shroud which caused the factory spring to “snake”. A replacement striker assembly will cure that, and allow a fair comparison of factory and Tubb springs.

Yep.

'J' locks are evil things, no matter what spring is installed. -Al
