i have a BAR 30-06 and yea i know its not a benchrest but in years past i have killed several deer with it using factory hornady frontier ammo - 165gr and have found myself low on ammo - i have not hunted much in the last few years but loan it out to kin to use and they all love it - very little recoil for a 30.06 and its accurate enough to put a deer down over 300 yards -- well they expect ammo to come with it when they pick it up and i know i am not going to buy new ammo for them but i will reload for them - anyhow i have always used the frontier ammo and i know the gun likes it and actually shoots it great - anyhow i would like some suggestions on what type of powder you think they use for the factory stuff - i know its stick type powder and its 56.5gr - i will use the old brass, have plenty as they saved it all for me) and as far as the primer it looks like just a plain old winchester primer ??? care to guess on that one for me too ?? anyhow looking at the reloading charts i know it wont be any of the powders i have so i am looking to buy a pound of that too - and some hornady 165 gr BT spire points and i will be set - as for the primer and powder anyone want to make a suggestion thanks

I have reloaded a Browning BAR since 1973 in
30-06.
IMR 4350 is the powder
165 Sierra GameKing BTSP or Nosler Ballistic Tip
56.0 grains
Fed 210 Match primer
FC Brass
55.0 with 180gr Nosler Part
Suggest RCBS Small Base Sizer Die in sizing the cases
I apply a mild crimp on bullet with Lee factory Crimp Die.
The BAR action is tuned for IMR 4350 powder and suggest to know how to disassemble the gas system piston to clean . Like mine it will give you years of service.

I was able to clone factory loads, and then do much better with handloads with several of these for friends in 30-06 and other calibers.

Some of these had the BOSS on the muzzle and those really did work for them.

I also liked 4350 with the 165 grain hunting bullets, but I used H4350 instead of the IMR version.

The CCI 34 primer is designed for auto and semi-auto, but I didn't find any primer dents or reasons to use them so I used Fed 210M.

I also tested and found I didn't need to crimp with regular neck tension.

The newer ones did not need the small base dies, but the older Belgian ones did. Check your once-fired brass and you will be able to see if the 200 line is blown out.

These were all really well made and elegant rifles. If you have a favorite factory load, it won't be difficult to clone it and usually you will find you can do better.

The CCI 34 was designed for a free floating firing pin and military ball powder in cold climate. You do not have to use hard cup military primers in Browning BAR or Rem 742 auto.
BOSS come and gone FAD !
Yes my BARs are Belgium
CCI 34 is a magnum rifle primer !
H4350 is a good powder also !

Schandler,

I've had good luck duplicating Hornady loads by using Winchester or CCI mil spec primers and the same Hornady bullet. After weighing the charge, I'd find a VV powder in QuickLoad providing a similar velocity for the charge. It will help consistency if you weigh and prep the cases.

True
BOSS come and gone FAD !
It worked and tuners still do work. Browning quit with them because most shooters either were to lazy to adjust them or it confused them.

Boom
CCI 34 is a magnum rifle primer !
They say that in the marketing, but they come in 30fps slower velocity than Winchester Large Rifle
H4350 is a good powder also !
True.
