Tripod Mounting Small Devices

I have been reading other threads comparing LRFs where several people mentioned wishing their device came with a 1/4x20 tripod mounting shoe. One mentioned they improvised with some tape. I didn’t want to thread-jack, so this thread has some options probably better than tape.

1. “Expensive” option: Tether Tools Rock Solid Mighty Mount Tripod Adapter, $12.99. Aluminum with adhesive on one side. In case you don’t have enough space because your device has a battery door on the bottom or you just want the device to fit in the original case, you could pull the adhesive strip off and replace that with velcro which could be split to deal with the door opening and would also let you use your expensive $13 Tether Tools adapter on more than one optical device:

I think the velcro option would wobble a little bit, but I think you could slip a small bungee or two around it without interfering with the pan/tilt after velcroing it on and that should be the coup de grace. Actually, try the small bungees first, maybe that’s all you need.

2. “Cheaper” option: buy a 1/4 x20 washer and buy a small 1/2” nylon cutting board. I found a 1/2” x 6” x 10” cutting board on line for less than $2 sans shipping. The 1/4x20 nuts can be anywhere from $0.50 each down to nearly free depending on whether SS and how many you buy. You can make one of these adapters for just a few $ total or make a bunch of them for around $0.75 each, not including any velcro. Use a Dremel to cut a hex shaped hole in the plastic and pound the nut into it. You could throw some glue in before driving the nut in but probably not needed unless your hex hole is a little loose. Attach the mounting shoe to your device with velcro or cut your plastic shoe down to bare minimum size and hot-glue it onto your device. If you purposely cut your hole just a little deep you can get a little compression on the plastic when you screw it down, and presto, built in lock washer. If the velcro makes your device wobble a little, see above.

I’m gonna use one of these options — or something better that one of you will suggest — after I get a better LRF. The one I have now is an obsolete piece of crap. I was shopping those when this came up.

Happy Father’s Day.
