Trimming for consistent neck length

When you trim cases, are you trimming for an averall length or keeping the neck from "growing" too much...or both. I know this is a rather basic question but how do you measure the length of the neck from shoulder to end with a high degree of accuracy? providing I trim the case to length, could that give me necks of different lengths and possibly more surface holding area for the bullet?

Is the length of the neck not as critical as long as it's chamfered, round, etc? Just curious as I'm going to start handloads for the 260 for groups and have read many things on this just not sure how you keep the neck length consistent.

Over-all case length is measured from the case head, primer end)
to the case mouth. The neck length will be dictated by the rifles chamber. SAMMI specs. control min - max dimensions of factory cartridges. Hope this helps. Bill

Careful trimming will accomplish both goals. Remove primer before you measure a case. I prefer to trim about .010 less than SAMMI or reamer specs. I don't believe trimming is an exact science, but needs to be consistent - expecially if you are turning necks. A thou or maybe two difference in individual cases is OK. Always inside champfer and debur after trimming.

Thanks for the help....while on topic, what degree cutters should I get? I see a 30 and 45 deg deburring cutter and I assume the 28 deg is the norm for the inside?
