Trimming Case Length

Anyone else notice this or is it just me, but i do all my case prep by hand, no power tools or case prep centers, yup it takes time but I don't mind. So I trim my .308 Hornady Match brass to 2.005, but I've noticed after I trim to 2.005 and smooth (chaffer) the outside and inside, then remeasure, it 99% of the time goes back to 2.006. So now I've been trimming to 2.004 then doing the edge smoothing, measuring again and getting my 2.005. Just me ? or anyone else have this happen and notice this ?

XChasn,

If the cutters aren't sharp you may be moving the brass in addition to cutting. But personally I wouldn't worry about .001" on case length variation.

Welcome to the Forum, 2.005 for 308Win is too short, that is book minimum, this tool will tell you exactly what your trim length is, http://www.sinclairintl.com/.aspx/pid=32925/Product/Sinclair-Chamber-Length-Gage I suspect that when chamfer in/out that a small burr is left giving you the .001, a twist or 2 on some 0000 steel wool should take care of it, I don't shoot BR and I wouldn't worry about it, I know I can't shoot the difference of .001 trim length

I agree... It's not earth shattering, but it's a little short. I like to run mine at about 2.008 to 2.009 or so.

I actually haven't trimmed in a while. I might bust the LE Wilson out and uniform some brass this week.

I trim all my.308 to 2.005. I've never seen an accuracy difference with them or the ones I let go to 2.010. I prefer shorter necks. YMMV.
