trimming and pointing your bullets

Folks, I am getting back into the long range bench rest game, my question is how many of you are trimming and or pointing your bullet meplats? and those that are, what in your opinions are the best makers to buy and use? I am talking 6mm, 6.5, and .30 cal bullets.

Thanks,

Ron

I like to spend less time at the loading bench than I used to. I just wont trim or point. I have had good luck with Vapor Trails and Roys right out of the box. I did have a lot of 105 hybrids that flat out would not shoot until I pointed them, then they were excellent. These days just buy good bullets. But some better shooters than me seem to trim and or point everything.

The hoover tipping system from hoover (bullettipping.com) is an amazing tool. I sort by OAL and then tip.

I'm with Alex - I don't like doing it, but it's something to do during the winter months. I'll tip and sort enough to get through the summer matches I care about.

It is part of my regimen also. Any new bullet is set up in Hoover trimmer to just barely touch point of bullet. I normally check 100. If any trim deeper or not at all I will keep that opened box and remaining are sold ASAP. From there I use a Whidden pointer as per their sample. Do not over point. Finally sort the bearings in .001 increments on granite.
Over the years the Spencers / Vapors have meet all these checks. I have been lucky enough to purchase close to 4000 Vapors of an extremely uniform and accurate lot from various sources. Also the new Roy’s I purchased are also very very uniform and am looking forward to some 1000 ladders with them.

I'm a sling shooter, so I have a bigger error window. With that said, I shoot good bullets @ 600 right out of the box. For 1K they are trimmed to the shortest OAL then trimmed as little as possible to cleanup the nose, then re-pointed. I have been using the Whidden pointing die since they introduced it, and it has never disappointed me.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

There is a lot of good info in this thread on the subject - https://forum.accurateshooter.com/t...g-and-pointing-after-sorting-bullets.3970629/

For 6mm I would highly recommend you contact Tom Jacobs, Roy Hunter or Bart Sauter and get on their list for custom 103gr 6mm bullets. They all make excellent bullets that will serve you well.

sorry for the old post but how do we contract Roy Hunter or Tom Jacobs? I want to know more about their 90-105 grain bullets for 6BR.

My understanding is (and not speaking for Roy) that Roy Hunter is no longer making bullets. Alex Wheeler has Roy's bullet making machinery.
Tom Jacobs is @Tom E on this forum and you can find contact info on the Vapor Trail website as well.

I don’t point or trim them I do sort them I will recommend Vapor trail and Wheelers bullets they have to be the best out there.
Good luck
