Trigger for savage target action

Whats the best trigger out there that can be put on a savage target action? I am going to benchrest shoot with it, so an adjustment down to 2-4 oz is desired. Thanks

I'd also like to know the answer to that question. ???

The other issue for me is how I'm going to import it into Canada. There is a real problem for USA suppliers sending "gun parts" into Canada. I understand our Customs Department doesn't care about things like triggers, but USA regulations require the supplier to have a very costly "export permit" - which usually means it's not practical. :P

Probably the Sharpshooter Supply evolution trigger, about $300, you have to send your action in to them, they will true and time it with the trigger. I ordered a target action already timed and trued, and with that trigger installed, directly from SSS, for a new f-class gun, but to be honest if I was building a benchrest gun I'd buy something like a Stiller Viper action and install a Jewell for not much more total.

I already have the savage action. It shoots great so I would like to keep it, but have grown tired of the accutrigger locking up because I have it set too light. What about a rifle basix trigger?

I could be wrong, but I don't think you can safely get those down to 2-4oz. Just email or call SSS and ask to be put on their waitlist for the time/true+trigger install (they said they now only do time/true jobs in monthly batches). They'll call you when your place in line comes up, you mail your action in, and a couple of weeks later you'll get the action back with the new trigger.

I am having a new 6.5X47 built based on the Savage PTA and my gunsmith is installing the Rifle Basix Sav 2 trigger on mine. It can be adjusted as low as 4 oz. according to directions. I also do not like the Accutrigger feel on a bench rifle although my Savage deer rifle has it and I don't mind it at all on a rifle I may shoot only 12 rounds thru in a year.

I have an Accutrigger on a .223 LRPV used in competition down to 14 ounces and I don't mind it. Also have an older SSS competition trigger on a BVSS 6.5-284 and it adjusts down to about 8 ounces before it will fire on slam closing the bolt. Have a Rifle Basix on a 6BR, Rem 700. I like it, very smooth and it adjusts down to 4 ounces. Hard to tell the difference between it and my Jewel triggers.

I have the new SSS evolution trigger on my target action with a 30BR I use for BR. Mine will work very good at the 2.5 oz range. If I adjust it down to 2 oz, it is not very reproducible. IMHO it is not equivalent to a Jewel. However, it leaps above an AccuTrigger. If I were going with a dedicated BR gun then I would go with a custom action for sure. But I don't have the interest, time, or funds to build a truely dedicated BR gun (custom action, BR stock, jewel, etc). I am having fun with my Savage and I switch barrels and shoot the same action/stock/scope for FClass with a 223, 6BR, or 308. I really want to try one of the new Shilen actions that will allow me to utilize one the dozen or so Savage barrels I have and a Jewel trigger. I will also have all the M700 stock options. Someday....... Luck, Tim

Just talked to rifle basix. He is sending me a trigger to make sure it will install to the target action and that it is to my liking. No charge unless I like it and he pays shipping if I don't. So far I am very impressed with them and look forward to receiving the trigger. Great Customer service!

That is good service! My smith did mention that possibly the SAV-2 trigger will have to be slightly modified to fit. No word as of yet if he did have to modify.

On all my Sav 2's I've had to do some very minor filing to the trigger body in order to get the retaining pin through without tapping. Personally I'd rather file a thousandths or two than hammer the pin through. I also appreciate the fact they needed to be filed. Makes a nice tight custom fit.

All three of my Sav 2's were installed and adjusted for lightest pull without slam firing and then a touch more for safety. I used no trigger pull guage for installation. Later a friend bought a guage and I tried all three. All broke at 7oz's.

Just remember when replacing the Accutrigger. If you bang an aftermarket trigger and it releases the gun WILL FIRE unlike the Accutrigger.

I have an Evo 2 also. Its not as smooth as a Jewel but not bad at all. It does have some design flaws I'm not particularily happy to see but so far they're not causing trouble.

I have a Rifle Basix Sav2 on my 12F single shot target action. It was very easy to install and comes complete with a step by step video. I have mine set at 10 oz and it compares well with most aftermarket triggers I have tried.

Clay Mitchell is a great guy to deal with and shipping to the UK was no problem.

Another thing to try is remove the red accutrigger safety lever. This stops it locking up at low settings and allows for a much lighter trigger pull for Benchrest.

camac,
Will you end up with slam fires though if you close the bolt to hard?
Wayne.

Absolutely. IMO not a good idea to remove the safety from an Accutrigger. Removing the blade will not lighten the trigger pull it will just get you banished from your local range. Noone wants to be around the guy who's gun automatically fires every 5th shot ;D
As I said earlier the RB 2 will also inadvertently fire the gun if adjusted to low. 7ozs is as low as I could go for safetys sake.
Your dealing with a factory action with all its imperfections. The reason Fred Moreo only installs the Evo 2 trigger on actions he T&T's is that action needs to be tuned and modifyed for that trigger.

What Accutrigger do you have now? The 6oz. Comp model or the 1.5oz. Huntin model?

The RB 2 is a great upgrade from the 1.5lb trigger. IMO not so much for the 6oz. model. The blade never has bothered me tho. Some folks hate it. I regularily switch classes between shooting a 1.5oz. Jewel and 6oz. Accutrigger in the next relay. Does'nt bother me in the least.

If you remove the blade it may fire for 100 rounds then it will start slam firing, then pull apart and reset. Not worth the trouble or the hazard fact. Danger, danger Will Robinson :D
