I finally got around to testing just how close I can trickle. The electronic scale that I used was the Bald Eagle, the balance scale a tuned (by me) RCBS 10-10, the trickler was RCBS with their new base and extension tube, and the powder was H322. For the first test I used the Handy View, which is an adjustable prism and base that allows a straight in view at the scale pointer end with the scale on my desk top.
I put some powder in the pan, set the scale so that it balanced, and then weighed the pan and charge on the electronic scale, making sure that it was zeroed first. My variance using this setup was +- .05 grain.
The next test was identical except that I set up a web cam very close to the scale so that I had a magnified view if the scales beam pointer on my computer monitor. It took me about five trickle up and weigh repetitions to get used to the setup, so that my results were their best, and after that my next ten charges were +- .03 gr. After each trickled charge was weighed on the electronic scale, I dumped less than a grain of powder back into the trickler and then put the pan back on the balance scale, and trickled up.
