Tri County Gun Club in Oregon

Hey guys. I'm looking for a gun range in Oregon that has some serious bench rest shooters. Today I visited Tri County Gun Club near Portland and it doesn't appear this range has any serious bench rest shooting. I asked and the range officer said there were not many bench rest shooters there. I found it interesting while visiting the 200/300 yard range, it never goes cold, so I wondered if and how people would set up wind flags. Kinda funny - I was told about the only time the 200/300 yard range goes cold is when the deer start to feed downrange and someone has to go shoo them off. I liked the way the range was set up so you could change targets w/o the range going cold, but the impression I got is it was mostly hunters that even used it. At the 100 yard range I mostly saw AR-15 style rifles and not a single set of wind flags.

My hope was to join a range where I could find someone to help mentor me along, but I don't think Tri County is the place. If I'm wrong, please let me know. And if this isn't the place, is there anywhere in NW Oregon or SW Washington where the benchrest shooters are concentrated? Surely someone other then myself in Oregon is interested in precision shooting.

I'm reasonably sure Tri-County has several 600yd BR matches each year for the last couple years... if you go over to the forums @ benchrest.com look for posts by a guy who goes by 'Willy46' or something like that... he's the match director.

As far as point blank BR... no idea.

Otter,
Try this site BigBamboo posted the other day, just change to the area you need hope it helps some.

It is the 100/200 yard shooting I'm most interested in. While Tri County has a 600 yard range and a few matches, it shoots from elevation over the top of the 200/300 yard range. No idea how they would set up wind flags that way.

Wayne, I checked out the website earlier but it doesn't give any information other than the name of the club and location. I can find all that using DEX. That website would be more useful if there was information about the club, but I understand why it doesn't. That would be a lot of work just to set up and next to impossible to maintain. Without money coming in from the website no one can afford to do that for free.

From what I heard at the nbrsa nationals in april Tri-County is no longer affiliated with the nbrsa 600 yard program.
I won't say why are the post will get deleted.

Just to answer some questions about Tri County Gun Club.

I was the one that started the 600 yard Benchrest program about three years ago. Another gentleman is actually the 600 yard program chair, I was helping him.

We found a way to accommodate both our fun shooters and our Benchrest shooters during matches. We try and keep it pretty laid back. What we found was we did not have ANY TCGC members that were shooting the bench rest matches. But we did get one guy and his daughter that were on the fence and built BR rigs right after the chair person decided to cancel the 600 yard Benchrest Program.

As for short range BR, there has been nothing in the last 5 years. The match director just got tired of it and no one is willing to take it up. I personally have considered trying to start a Benchrest program that would shoot long range BR one month and a short range score match the next. Ever other month 3 LR and 3 SR a year. I am not dealing with moving backers!

Here is the problem, it is a lot of work, shutting the 200/300 range down for a match is difficult, and attendance has been getting less and less. Takes a lot to setup for 10 shooters.

I would entertain the idea of bring it back under a Benchrest program, but I am writing this while sitting in the hospital with my new baby boy..time is very limited. I would need a lot of volunteering, if you want to shoot it you have to be involved. If we had a collective that TOOK ownership of it instead of show up shoot, complain if something is not perfect and leave, we may be able to build something.

Just my thoughts, if I hear more interest it my beep thing to pursue.

And I do think we have let our membership laps with NBRSA, I know things have changed, but talk about a pain to deal with!

Best wishes,

Willys46
