Trashing groundhogs from a trailer.

Picked up a hayfield , 412 yards deep and about 300 yards wide, the farmer has a 40 foot trailer that he uses as a deer blind, two chairs, a couch, in the shade pretty cool, he told me he sees a few groundhogs in the field, so I set up there today in 6 hours I saw 8 gh's and shot 5 the others were out of range. Closest shot was 105 yards out to 171 yards, where I shot this big bruiser right square in the throat, check out the fresh hole, all others were shot where they need to be all DRT! 3 were standing at their den holes in the middle of the field and never moved a hair, these thing are really heavy by November they'll really be heavy. The 17 never ceases to amaze, pic heavy refer to addendum for overflow pics. I'm knocking on the door of 100 gh's so far this season. One was ear shot at 146 yards, most were neck or shoulder.

Hunting in style. :)
Tell us a little more about your rifle set up and load.

Hal
Rifle is a stock factory CZ527 American with a Hawke Endurance 6x24x50 with the long range dot illuminated if needed, the best varmint hunting scope I've ever used. My factory set trigger is set at 1 pound , not recommended for inexperienced or excitable shooters, but totally drop safe, just a touch when the dot is on target and she fires breaks 100% no creep like a glass rod breaking. My load is a Hornady Superformance 15.5 lead free NTX running at 3870 fps.I've anchored groundhogs out to 200 yards, hit vitally of course. Sighted in at 100 yards at 200 yards there's only a 2.5 inch drop and enough steam about 165 lbs to anchor a groundhog. The 20 grain does better yet but I save those for big game. I've taken a dozen coyotes with this load up to about 150 yards, all DRT! The one hog shot at 170 yesterday dropped like a lightning bolt hit him,a big bruiser, dead center chest pic posted, NO exit wound.

Is your rifle a .17 Fireball or .17 Remington ?

Hal
17 Hornet, not a whole lot gained by those 17's a little more range lots more muzzle blast no ammo available, or at ridiculous prices. none for the hornet either luckily I stocked up and am set awhile. When range is a factor the 204 fits the bill perfectly, just something about the hornet I really like. At 300 yards a 20 grain Hornady 17 hornet only drops 6 inches, and can drop a coyote easily with 200 ft lbs delivered.
