touching up checkering

I am attempting to refinish my CZ 452 stock. I need to cut the existing checkering deeper to cut out the old finish and sharpen it up. Should I use a 60 or a 90 degree cutter?
Thanks!

hello rain, if you are going to refinish the complete stock , take some formby's refinisher & a stainless cleaning brush & soak the checkering area , scrub out the old finish the best you can. then you can complete the stock finish, i don't know if you're using spray or a sand-in type finish but if you use a spray be sure & tape off the checkering. Having completed the finish, now is the time to re-cut the checkering-- i use a 60 degree cutter on all my stocks. this type cutter makes a better looking diamond in my opinion, remember to take your time & don't get in a hurry, afterwords use an old toothbrush to apply a couple of coats of finish to seal the checkering, then wipe out excess oil with a folded paper towel------------take care craig

It will be easier, at least to me, if you buy two cutters. One single line and the other with the spacer on it although you will need to know the spacing. After you're done, Pilkingtons makes a brush in liquid to seal but not clog the checkering, it is available from Brownells.

I like my old 60 degree Dembart checkering tools. Okedoke gave you good advice. If you have both single and skip line checkering, you will need a single cutter tip and a double tip. Also, use a very good overhead light and go slow. Do not overrun the checkering tool, it will look like crap if you do.

PS - Prepare for eye strain

All solid advice has been given, the only thing that I would add to it is to purchase an flip up / flip down optical magnifier. You can buy them for different focal lengths and you won't believe how much easier it is. All of the normal places that sell end mill/drills etc will carry them. A couple places would be Production Tool & Grainger.
