Totally awesome barreling and action truing system

Hey guys,
I have been working on this concept for three years and have been using this system for about 1 year. videos are pretty self explanitory...Enjoy!

Nate,
Very much enjoyed the videos, thanks a heap.
Hooray for the internet, no way we could see so much so easily without it.
Much appreciate your sharing with us.

Very well though out and designed. Looks like a great solution for short barrels that don't make it all the way thought the headstock.

True Bore Alignment System

I've seen one in use (at SSG) and was so impressed with the capability it has to hold work stress free.
IMO -they are state of the art and a must have for holding/chucking totally stress free, as is so desired in gunsmithing for barreling and action truing.
Thanks SSG for the innovation !!!!

Very nice piece of equipment, but what's the price.

Most average smiths can't afford something like that, a 6 jaw chuck with independent jaws will do just fine. If the bore is not concentric with the outside of the barrel on a custom barrel, I'm sending the barrel back to the manufacturer.
By checking front and rear of a stock barrel and adjusting the spider and chuck, you can get most barrels that are a little out back in, a few shims may be required.

I'll agree, far less stress with this system and it's one heck of a great idea, but is it at all affordable, precise machine work costs money and just a hunk of steel for the main parts costs a lot these days with steel going up daily.

For a smith who does production work or has the money, it's a great solution to a problem as far as stress, but everything else can be handled with a little set up time.

Not trying to give the OP a hard time, it's a beautiful piece of equipment and will help to turn out a perfect job in less time, but how many can afford it ?
I doubt I could of when I was smithing. I always had a back log of work, but a single smith can only make so much money, so it's not something I could have afforded for my work, something I would have loved to have had.

The problem is, most shooters are not willing to pay for top notch work, there are those who will spare no expense, they want the best, but they are very much in the minority, most want something for nothing.
You spend the time to give them a barrel or other work, as precise as you can make it because you care about your work and reputation, but in most cases, people don't want to pay for that kind of work, you do it anyway, but you have to draw the line somewhere as to equipment costs and spend more time, make less money for your time, but unless the volume is there, expensive pieces of equipment are hard to justify and still be able to put food on the table.
A one man operation, as most are today, just have to balance equipment cost vs. return, one man can only do so much. A larger operation could sure take advantage of this, it is a beautiful piece of work.
Just my 2 cents.

"If the bore is not concentric with the outside of the barrel, on a custom barrel, I'm sending it back". You're going to be making a lot of trips to the Post Office.

There has never been a barrel made with the bore perfectly concentric. You might want to order those shipping labels in bulk.

I'm not sure I've EVER seen a six jaw with individual adjustable jaws. Please advise where you've seen such a chuck.

A four jaw adds all kinds of terrible stress to a hollow receiver.

This device is just about perfect for the intended work. Nothing else on planet earth will handle a receiver or barrel in the same way. All other deviced require uneven stresses to be placed on the action or barrel..........

But I'm still trying to find out how much it costs.

Man, that truing system is completely money! Wish I had a Haas TL-1 like that to throw it on too... guess I'll just have to live with a plain ol' manual though.

Hey guys,
Had to take a few pix of the progress.........hope you enjoy shiny metal.
Will be posting some more videos and pix of other cool stuff soon!

Can you supply one to my gunsmith? He is some big guy in Mandan you might know him?

Very very well thought out.

True-Bore Alignment System

A few days back, I took 4 barrels out to SSG. While their Nate was so kind to let me spend the day and watch my components being aligned/dialed in the True-Bore Alignment System, and then machined.
The simplicity of the his system and stress free manor the system holds the work, makes so much sense to me, which leaves a lasting impression of perfection in my mind.

I have been privileged and blessed over the last 10 years or so to have several great gunsmiths do barrels for me, and have been honored to watch them perform their arts.
I've had barrels that were done in a "steady rest", some that were done through the spindle bore "rotationally", some that were done "adjusted outward with a spider", and now these that were done in the True-Bore Alignment System.

I have seen excellent accuracy come from all these setups of chamber/fitting and believe all their arts are to be commended!!!
I am not saying one way or the other will produce more raw accuracy, but am saying the TBASystem is the most practical and stress free setup I have seen to holding and dialing in a barrel.

To emphasize on what I saw while their, I will describe the process Nate used on the barrels. After dialing the barrel in to less then 1/2 of 10-thousands across the 4" of his SSG range rods, he then put a dial-indicator in the bore (near the proposed throat area) and again the indicator read less then 1/2 of 10-thousands. All adjustments were done to the TBASystem, none to the chuck, and the 30" barrels were "non-supported" at the outboard ends, through the spindle bore of his Haas CNC.
Next the CNC lathe cut the threads and tenon. In that operation I seen on the screen it was being done at around 950-RPM. Then the recess was cut, chamfers were made, and chamber boring was done, again at similar speeds (a little less then 1000-rpm).
After these operations were completed, he re-inserted the SSG range rod and the indicator repeated exactly less then 1/2 of 10-thousands across the 4" rod, and again put into the bore the indicator repeated spot on the same as from the start.
The chambers I have watched him ream, resulted the same as the fittings, with 100% repeatable indicator readings to all the areas of the chamber that he reached for with the indicator stand.
From start to finish, I seen no movement of the parts being held, as proven by the before & after indicator readings. A very lasting impression to say the least !!!

Guys,
It's been awhile since I posted. It's been a crazy busy summer here.
I got a chance to take some video clips of my bolt holding fixture as well as a tapered bushing for holding barrels on a taper.
Thanks for all the purchases and interest. I am starting another run of these as I only have a few left.
