TORQUE VALUES FOR A CUSTOM SAVAGE 3 SCREW ACTION

Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts or reccomendations for torque values for a 3-screw Savage Target Action bedded in a SSS LRBR stock. The barrel nut was removed and a recoil lug was installed along with a Krieger 28 ' heavy taper barrel. It is chambered for the 6mm BR. Any thoughts and help would be appreciated. Bill

Hey Bill,

After hearing what Dave Tooley and Tom Meridith had to say .....

In a properly bedded stock, specific torque numbers aren't needed. Just snug 'em down. The screws just hold the barreled action from falling out of the stock. The aren't to be used as a tuning aid. If so, the bedding ain't right.

HEY ALF, THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR REPLY. I WAS THINKING ALONG THOSE LINES TOO BUT I WANTED TO HEAR IT FROM SOME OF YOU GUYS AS WELL. ACCORDINGLY, THEN THE 25 IN LBS THAT SAVAGE RECCOMENDS WILL BE A PLENTY. BILL

25 inch pounds is recommended for none bedded actions. Using more than that may pull the screw heads through the stock. Pillar beddings allows you to use 55 to 65 inch pounds. Try 55, 60 and then 65 inch pounds and see if the rifle groups better with one setting over another.

Alf I have heard some very good shooters say that by adjusting the rear screw or tang screw torque it will take out some of the vertical and some said that to get the vertical out they had to float the tang

I'm with Alf. A properly bedded rifle won't care about torque values...as long as the screws aren't too loose. If there is stress in the bedding, then all bets are off.
