Tom Morley's visit for 1,000 yd challenge

I met Tom Morley in Murdo, South Dakota on a prarie
dog safarri in '07. We both made our longest to date
prarie dog shots under the same tent in the same dog
town at 850 yds. I started out shooting at a dog and
doping the wind. Voldoc's bench was vacant and Tom
asked Doc if he could try his gun. Tom and I were
shooting at two dogs standing next to each other.
Tom and I were alternating shots. Winds
were high but we were walking in closer with each shot.
Then Tom nailed his and there was jubilation by everyone
under the tent. Tom had never attempted a shot this long
before. He had nailed it.

Now the pressure was on me. But as luck would have it
I scored on my next shot. I jumped up out of my seat.
High five's all around. A lasting friendship had been established.

Next, I told Voldoc to set down and try one. It only took 3 to 4
shots before Doc had one down. John Kruzan, Don McCutcheon,
and Pedro witnessed the event.

I came home and set up a 1,000 yd range and it was not long
before Tom decided to make the 8.5 hour drive down for the
baptism into the 1,000 yard club. He brought a 6 BR and a
6 mm Woodchucker which is essentially a 6 XC. He did very
well scoring repeatedly on Ole Chuckie and Chico the prarie dog.

Tom has made the pilgramage from Wisconsin to Tennessee
two times and I hope he can come again this year. We set on
the 1,000 yard line two days and only leave for lunch at the Stagecoach.

Tom holds the record at the birdog range for 3 shot small group.
Less than 1.5 in.
Smile on Tom's face -- PRICELESS --
Good guns, good friends, best of times!!!

MAN! That is a heck of a group for a thousand yards. Do you remember what weight bullets he was using in the Woodchucker to shoot that group??? WD

Birdog,

Now that is just a cool story, thank you for sharing and congrats out to Tom.

I am very envious of your home range. That type of access/range just outside my back door is one of my life's dreams. Awesome for you!!

I have a lot of shooting related gadgets in my gear box that I take with me when I shoot.. However, I cannot for the life of me figure out the purpose of the "Spatula"... Take a look at the 3rd pix down, note the spatula on the bench. Is this something unique to Tennessee Marksmanship skills? Maybe I shouldn't ask? :o

;D ;D ;D ;)

I was always happy with my little 200 yard backyard range until I started seeing your posts. Been following your adventures for a few years now and feel I know you and Vol Doc as neighbors. Keep the stories and photos coming.

Rod, That spatula is the brain child of one of Dawson's shooting buddies: Me.
It has a one inch diameter hole bored in the middle of the blade, and you hold it flat against the target plate and spray a little contrasting color paint on the blade. Remove the spatula and you've got a target dot that's easy to see.
Holding the spatula by the handle keeps the spray paint off of your fingers.
Great excuse to go to the Kitchen Supply Store in the Mall; well that's a story for another day. Get one, you'll like it John Kruzan

Hi, my name is Gary Peterson, Tom Morley was my stepdad. He passed about a year and a half ago. I have been clearing out his gunroom and have met and talked to a few members who had know Tom and had great respect for him as a person and for his knowledge, as did I.
The picture that Birddog posted of Tom is on the wall of my office. I didn't know or had forgotten the story behind the picture just thought it was a great picture of Tom.
Glad that I saw this post and did my heart good to hear you guys talk about Tom.

Thanks

Gary
