Tolerances on a Remington 700 build?

Jay Christopherson

What are you guys shooting for as far as tolerances go on a Remington 700 build, for match use and for a field rifle/hunting rifle use?

- bolt nose to chamber face (.010" is the number I've seen most often)
- front of bolt lugs to barrel face
- headspace (Go + .002" for match is a common number I've seen, Go + ??? for field/hunting)

I'm looking for opinions on safe and useful tolerances here.

Your numbers are about ideal for what you have in mind. I would also make the barrel counterbore at least .010 over bolt nose diameter. Advice given to me by Jim Borden. Has worked out well for me personally. :)

Paul

I use .010 clearances on all sides. Tha the long axis clearances will close up .001 or so when the barrel is tightened up.
