"Timing" an action

I am a novice in the accuracy game and do not understand what is meant by "timing"an action. Can this be done with any action, and how do you tell when it is done correctly? Thanks for your replies.

Thank you LRPV...I did a site search in the articles, bulletin and home pages and came up with nothing. Guess I should have looked in the forum section :.
I just purchased a Haverkamp action for a build and wanted to know what to look for or ask my gunsmith about when I bring the action and barrel to him.

There is another timing issue that involves the trigger. As the bolt of an action is cycled to cock the striker, the hand off from the cocking cam to the trigger is a matter of trigger position and/or dimension. If the top lever/sear face that picks up the cocking piece is too far forward, the pin will fall some amount as the bolt handle is closed, and the total striker fall will be reduced by that amount. On the other hand if the opposite is true, additional effort will be required to operate the bolt, because there will be some cock on close. Some actions that have trigger brackets have ways to adjust for this, and in the case of cock on close the cocking piece can be modified to fix the issue. The desired configuration would be such that there was a very slight fall of the striker as the bolt is closed. Another thing that can be done to refine the bolt's function is to reduce the height of the holding notch that is just past the top of the cocking cam. If this is done, neither the shape or center location of the notch should be altered.

Thank you Boyd. I thought there was supposed to be something about the trigger as well. I have read about the trigger timing work that Jim Borden does on his builds and didn't understand what that meant. I put the Jewell trigger in the action when I got the other day to see if it fit and dry fired it a couple times before removing it. I don't recall how the bolt felt when I closed it (harder than without the trigger installed). The Haverkamp action has the bracket (two screws) to remove the trigger without having to take it out of the stock, so it may be able to be adjusted if it is a bit "off".

Dans40x is correct. He put a new bolt handle on a custom action of mine and it was out of time. He contacted me and corrected the problem before sending back.

+1 and do not assume triggers are manufactured to the same dimensions or consistent tolerances over time. Long story short, each action/trigger combo needs to be checked and potentially modified to get the timing right.
