Time to brush up on your disaster/survival skills

With everything going on as well as the speculation of civil unrest, I thought it might be good to have a thread concerning this type of thing.

Earth Quakes, Hurricanes, Wildfires, Tornadoes, Civil Unrest........be prepared.

I've already got a a substantial supply of things myself but others may need some help in getting ready.

Here's a start:

Here's a list of things needed in order of importance:

Do not count on the electric grid being operational. Natural disasters and civil unrest both with take this down for an extended period of time.

1. Firearms and ammo. Know how to use them properly. IF YOU DON'T HAVE THIS, others may take what you have.
2. Clean drinkable water source. Short term: 1 week. Long term: 6 months worth.
3. Food that can be preserved long term. Short term: 1 week. Long Term: 6 months worth.
4. Heirloom seeds for planting a garden should it become necessary to grow your own food.
5. Gas tanks kept half full at minimum. Park facing OUT for fast get away if you live in a city. (during civil unrest)
6. LEARN BASIC FIRST AID. Build or buy a GOOD first aid kit that will sustain yourself AND family/friends.
7. Join a network of people that can be trusted if possible in order to barter for goods or services.

Add some ideas.

A high-quality sleeping bag capable of preventing you from getting hypothermia if the grid goes down in cold weather.

Canned sardines - they last a long time and provide a good source of protein. Dried beans - they last for forever - easy to prepare. Salt, Pepper, Canned stewed tomatos. This will make the beans more eatable. :) These items have a long if not unlimited shelf life.

A camp axe for chopping wood to make a fire.

A campfire pot with supports for cooking over an open fire. We may be eating ground hog legs at some point.:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

For people on life sustaining meds - extra supplies - might be a problem with insurance coverage, however, so see the alterative below:

Lots of your favorite booze. If everything goes to hell at least you can go out happy. ;);););)

A solar charged battery pack to recharge electronics, I took a cheap unit like this on a 4 day backpacking trip and recharged everyone's cellphones for the whole trip.
Water purifier is also helpful.

Take a lesson from the old Westerns. People banded together in a fort when the Indians attacked. Those that stayed alone on their ranches died.
You need to have a plan with friends and neighbors involved to join forces in case the worst happens.

Nick that is a pretty broad statement, full auto can go from a GAU 8A avenger to an American 180. Some are way more controllable than others. And you are right some require a considerable amount of skill. An FN PS 90 was designed to require almost no skill at all. Thats why they are so popular with government agencies that have no business with them in the first place.

There is always strength in trusted numbers....

One big tip of advice is to not let outsiders know what you have.
You'll be used as a cache in a dire situation.....If you do not know
how to live off the grid, better start learning.

Depending on the situation, if you live in an urban area or city during severe civil unrest...........you need some friends in rural areas that will help you. Keep your supplies in such a way that they can loaded into your vehicle as rapidly as possible.

BE SURE TO LEAVE IN TIME TO GET OUT. At some point, travel will become extremely dangerous.

I live rural. I don't have enough land to till for a garden to sustain my family. Don't have enough diesel fuel to last in the tractor. Don't have a horse, mule or a stubborn cow if some sort to pull a plow (which I have), don't have enough land to sustain such animal. I do have enough wood cut split for 3 years for heat but not for cooking. If everyone goes to the woods, deer and squirrels as well as rabbits will be extinct in short order. I could do short term maybe 6 months, me as well as most will be hard pressed to try and live off the land long term.

Full auto is a waste of ammo and a barrel burner. Unless you are very skillful after three rounds you are shooting at the sky.
That’s why a Vulcan has interrupted threads on the barrel. Wrench and gloves and the barrel is replaced in under 30 seconds. Those gloves are a must!
