Tikka T3 vs Sako action

Hi Gents (and ladies)

This is my first post.

I have the opportunity to get my hands on a brand new Sako 30-06 action (not sure the exact model and spec, need to see it in the next few days). I have a few general questions which I do not seem to find on the net.

1. This is classed by Sako as a medium action. I take it it is the same as other long (non magnum) actions? i.e. Howa 1500 short and long action.
2. Is the action the same, or essentially the same, as the Tikka T3? Reason for the question is that I want to use a Roedale RCSII stock (AICS with Viperskins) which they make for the Tikka T3 long action and need to know if this Sako action will fit or fit with minor mods to the stock/action.
3. The intention is for a 284 win build (I already have one on a K98 action but want to build another, sweeter, more precision one), I assume this action (Sako 30-06) will be ideal re length, bolt face etc?

thanks for any advice and replies,

regards

Can't reply specifically about todays actions and builds, but maybe 15 years ago the Tikkas got my interest because of the reports I read about their accuracy in the likes of American Rifleman magazine and others. At the time Tikkas and Sakos were being imported by Stoeger if my memory serves. Also at the time I was reading reviews about the Sako accuracy results and they were not as good as the Tikkas from the reports, although they were more expensive. After buying a Tikka 595 in 22 250, and being very happy with it, I called Stoeger about ordering an extra clip for the Tikka and while I was on the phone I asked why the Tikka were outperforming the Sakos if they knew. The answer I got was "We are not sure....they just do".
Perhaps looking around for present day reviews on the specific rifles you are considering might help.
Best Wishes

Sako typically has 3 action lengths: short, .223; medium, .243 and .308; long, .30-06, etc. There is also a magnum action with a larger bolt face. So, according to your post, you can't have it both ways. It is not a medium action and .30-06. It is probably a long action. Hope this helps. All of my SAkos are very accurate.

Not sure why Tikka's tend to be more accurate. The barrels are the same as far as I know but the action is more rigid on Tikka T3 with its smaller loading port. Something in the design must work a little better.

The T3 essentially has same action length for all calibres - only the bolt stop varies.

Any Tikka T3 action will be the right length for your build, as they are all the same action. The bolt stops length allows for a medium length caliber, and long action calibers.

I have built 2 custom .284's on T3 actions, and am very happy with both of them.
