Tikka T3 and Boyds Laminate stock

Bought a Wheeler FAT Torque Wrench yesterday. Trying to tighten action screws to 35 in lbs with red line being the marker used for my measurement. But, at this setting the bolt will not lift and the magazine will not release. Took wrench back and exchanged it today for a new one....same thing. So, to allow proper function, the setting is on nearly 15 in lbs. What is the deal? Should I be reading this in a different way or, what do I look at to ensure the stock is correctly torqued?

Concerned and need help.

Needs some pillars in that stock.

It was order with pillars... rifle sits good on the stock. Nothing looks out of place or crooked. Dollar under the barrel is good all the way up. Just can't put the torque on.

I put the original back on and set the wrench at 35 in lbs, tightened it down and it operated just fine. Magazine released, bolt worked like it should.

Not sure how to proceed. shrug...

If the original stock works fine and new one doesn’t then you have your answer, new stock needs work. Most likely it will have to be bedded in order to give clearance needed and get it out of the bind it’s in.

Stock is flexing or the front guard screw is to long when used with this stock. Been there and done that! Most likely a stock problem and not the torque wrench. Good luck and let us know what you find .

I bought a Boyd's At-One stock for one of my rifles a while back and they recommended their longer front action screw. It ended up being about one thread too long and bottomed out against the bolt. Loosen the bolts up until it functions and then inspect the bolt for scarring and the bolt for digging into the bolt. The stock length bolt worked fine....

It sounds like the Boyd's stock is shallower than the original. You could shorten the screws and that should take care of the bolt operation (front screw bottoming out on the bolt lug). It also sounds like the bottom metal/mag is also binding. I would try shimming the bottom metal. Once you find how much you need to shim it, you can bed it at that depth and it should be good.

Boyd's stocks require some fitting. Your front mounting screw is too long for the stock. Pull the bolt, torque your front mounting screw to spec then put you finger in the receiver and you will feel the screw. Shorten based on what you can see or feel. The magazine may be tight and require some relief, mine did also a T3.

ANSWERED:

after i quit the computer last night I took a good long look at the stock and it occurred to me that the bottom plate area may have been cut a little deep. So, i went into my basket of goodies and found some small washers and drill them out to allow the screwa to fit through them. Two washers on the front, one on the back and tightened it all down to 35 in lbs. Bolt worked fine, magazine release fine - Problem solved!

I will look at doing some bedding later but i am happy with this fix.

Exactly right. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. This is what I concluded last night as well and did the "shimming" idea with a few washers and it worked perfectly.

The boyds are good stocks once you put a little work into them. Order up some marine tex and bed the thing although a remington style recoil lug would be good, though I'm betting you don't want to get your receiver faced just yet.
