Tikka 595 master sporter.. Wow.

So I watch gunbroker and all the other forums, for Master Sporters. It's a gun I like. I got one, two weeks ago, and it's a brand new.308, factory original. Maybe 30 (from the previous owner)shots fired.. In the original box it was sent in.. I am in need of opinions. Keep it original? Go to 6br or 6xc barrels, like I planned( when I thought it would be a used gun, really used.)

Nice find! Took me a while to find my M595 Sporter. I got it from MTGuns back when they were selling them... Mine is also a 308. I have nearly 5000 rounds down the original barrel and it still prints sub 3/8" groups on a regular basis. Best group it ever shot was < 0.1". I say keep it as-is and see how it shoots before re-barreling. One really nice thing about the m595 Sporters is the factory magazines feed perfectly and are extremely long. I run my pet load at 2.991" COAL and can still feed reliably from the magazine.

If you don't mind hard recoil you might try working up to the load I use:

- Winchester Brass, sorted and prepped
- Fed 210M primers
- 208gr A Max
- 50gr RE-17 powder
- 2.991" COAL
- 2660 fps

Also keep an eye on those action bolts. They get just a little loose and there goes your accuracy...

That's what is killing me. It doesn't even have a scratch on it. Thought it would be used and it comes in as new, so now it's pristine and collector grade. Great find, but......"I have to put on gloves to handle it".

OK. I HAVE a plan. Shoot her. Mildly. And copy the stock. Actually 3 copies. One for a Remmy 700 action that sits, to be a 6 xc. A Shillen action for a 6br/30br, and a 6.5 Swede. Figured it out while cutting the grass. I have a wood shop and the wood. Just needed to clear my head and figure out what I really want. I finally rooted down to my base line. I really like the wood stock on these so I figure I'll copy it. I got lucky and got a great gun. Just caused more problems.{\rtf1\ansi\ansicpg1252

I'm at that age where I'm liking less recoil. One of the reasons I'm thinking about selling my TRG in 300 win mag. I have a lighter load with 37. Ish grains of Viht 135, that works well in my other 308s. I'll start with that, and play at stock making. I have a stack of walnut begging to be used.

Hi,
After much looking around I managed to find a M595 with 2 bolts and I sent it to Skeetlee off the forum and he chambered a Kreiger LV 1 in 13.5 twist barrel for me for the lighter bullets and fitted a Harrell's brake.
It may not be original now but boy does it work. It is a super feeding varmint rifle that really shoots Lee sure does do some fantastic work .

Nice rifle. That's about where I'm heading. I passed on one or two because of price/condition issues. Here is about the only place I mention a nice one and have some one know what I'm talking about. Took 6 months to find the first and 5 more to find this one. It takes a lot of effort searching. I was down with health issues but now I have the shop up and running again. Need a project besides furniture for my wife.

Boy oh boy, this brings back memories. Funny thing….I put that Master Sporter in storage and never shot it until last Friday. I finally decided I deserved it, what the hell!….and no, the 695 has a longer screw center. (That’s from my failing memory. I did one 695 in 338 Win Mag and I’m pretty sure it was a little longer but it’s been 6…7 years.)
Add: I like to confirm my sanity so I did a search and found this:

There were some master sporter tikka’s made in long action. Good luck finding one and better luck just finding a stock for the 695 in the master sporter. From Sako collectors:

Guns are made to be shot. If you aren't going to shoot it, sell it and buy something that you will shoot. Let collectors do the collecting. :-X

It sounds like a great candidate for a F-T/R rifle.
I'm with you @ryanjay11. In recent years, I've paired down my gun collection. The ones I wasn't shooting are gone, replaced by guns I will shoot.

Well …….that’s news! Thanks for that gem of info! I did not know that. Interesting!
I did a search and found this. It does make me wrong! I stand corrected!

I own two of these, both in 223. Excellent rifles. Only negative is the original 223 bbls were slow twist.
I’m currently working on load development for a 12 twist 223 m595. I’m trying 52-3 grain bullets. W748 test was a flop. My fault. Action screws had loosened up during shipping and I hadn’t checked them. Interesting thing was that I had a good load for my Remington on the bench, so I tried 5 in the Tikka. The 69 grain SMK with H335 shot better than any of the 52 grain bullet loads. 69s “ aren’t supposed to work” in a 12 twist.
