Tightening my 6AI groups

Took a bunch of seconds in F(O) at the 2009 Ontario Fullbore Champs with my 6AI - Friday Agg (300, 500, 900, 1000), Friday 1000, 2 day Long Range Agg (900, 1000). Don`t even get a handshake with a second.

Was always a 1950s style shooter, "buy and shoot". Have been resisting the new-fangled stuff like turning necks, neck collet dies and moly bullets. So here goes with my new persona - 60% turned necks, Redding neck die with a 0.269 bushing, cases sorted by weight. Even ordered some 105 AMax molys. Good Lord, where will it all end!

MacLennon throated my 30 inch 8 twist lead-lapped barrel so the 107s sit in the case with the bearing base above the donut. The Fajen prone stock bedded with JB Weld, trued 722 action, Timney trigger, Anschutz fittings and Bushnell 4200 6-24 Tactical in Burris Z-Rings sitting on a one piece Weaver Tactical base are all first rate. So I have to refine my loading methods.

Went out to my club`s 300 metre bench range today with some "treated" cases wearing 107 MKings over a load of RL22, Win brass and primers. Chronos at 3250 in the Summer. Light head wind, light rain, 4C (39F), bipod, rear sand bag. Put 5 shots into 1 7/16 (0.43 moa) at 300 metres (330 yds) shown in the pix below. One of those days when the holds and releases all look good and you can see shot after shot going into the 1/2 minute X-ring. Dark circle is the one minute 10 ring. Outer light circle is the ISU iron sight 10 ring.

markr, I am ready to bite the next bullet. The 2010 Canadian Fullbore Champs will be shot on the ICFRA F Class targets - 0.4 minute V-ring, 0.8 minute 5-ring at 300 yards. The Canadians, Brits and Aussies use a 5 ring target as opposed to the U.S. 10 ring target.

I print my own practise targets and have just finished scaling down to a 0.4 minute V-ring. I figure the time put in while the snow is flying up here North of the border will pay off next Summer. Nothing like looking at a target through a blizzard.

Curious.What neck diamater is your chamber?I am having a 243AI with a .270 neck and will be using a .266 neck bushing,for a loaded neck of .268.
Thanks

Joe, I had MacLennon put a standard SAAMI neck on the 6AI chamber. Neck turning was not on my radar 2 years ago. So the neck is a little larger in diameter than your .243AI might be. This probably accounts for the larger bushing in the neck die. My loaded rounds measure as 0.269 on the neck. So the bullet seats with a tight slip fit. That is my initial start in the voodoo science of neck turning. After 50 years of competitive shooting, I probably have a lot more to learn in this subject.
