tight neck 6x45...when to turn necks?

awaiting a pt&g 6x45 reamer with a .2695 neck. ok as is with some brass but i plan on using lapua .223 match. i expanded and loaded a 66 gr bullet and the neck measures .269...a bit tight for me, so i plan on turning the necks and wonder if it is best to turn as a .223(maybe after fire forming with cow in a .223 barrel) or expand and turn as virgin brass or expand, fireform in tight chamber with cow, then turn. i believe turning is more precise after the case has been fired (gun or cow). thanks in advance.

Did the same thing 6x45 .269" neck reamer for .265 to .266 max loaded rounds, works quite well. In my case using Win NATO brass unturned. So, I'd recommend turn to .2665" max neck diameter on a loaded round. 003" min clearance and try a few and see what the pressures and ES/SD looks like, in my case very good ES/SD and good velocity no abnormal pressure signs. In your case might be best to take 1.5-2 thou off, either method, then a finish pass of .5-1.0 thou after the first 6x45 firing. .0005" probably ain't enough to fire a bullet safely.

PD gun so I wasn't too keen on turning 1000+ necks.

Just think GrocMax you will have enough brass turned to wear out a bunch of barrels. If you anneal them on a regular basis they should last a long time. Matt

No I ordered the reamer based on the brass I'll use so I didn't have to turn necks. Meticulous brass prep on volume PD rounds doesn't gain me enough to worry about. 1/4 MOPD works just as well as 7/64 MOPD.

So far 6x45 is stupid easy to tune a PD load for, very 6BR-like in that regard.
