tight factory chamber? (throat)

I knew that bullet shapes were different but this is wierd.--
I have a Savage FCPk that I have had some issues with (not this) I just compared a Factory FGMM (uses SMK) to a load I was making with Hornady fmjbt- both 168's. measurement to the Ojive is longer on the FGMM that chambers smoothly than a round I load with the Horn's. The OAL is longer with the hornady by about .01, so not much. If I load the hornady to the same Ojive measurement as the SMK the bolt needs to be forced closed and smacked to open it. I measured to the lands with a stoney point, now horndady OAL gauge 10 times---to the lands was 1.930 to the ojive a FGMM round is longer and chambers just fine.--Maybe this is what is meant by "Jam"? I have been loading these for my gas guns at a nominal 2.810--as long as will fit in the magazine an have never seen any pressure signs, ftf, or any other issue so I don't think it is chambering to deep in them, but maybe having the gas release to work the action is absorbing some of this.--anyone else out there with these same components and rifle or have seen a similar issue, please chime in.

I have no reason not to believe you, but when I use the home made gage for seating off the lands no matter what bullet I use the diameter does not change. I determine the distance from the rifling to the bolt face once. As the throat wares the distance changes.

I know, it's wierd. I am going to go and buy a box of SMK's and compare again.
I should mention that this rifle has caused me a lot of grief for other reasons. It pulled the bullet from a factory round that would not fire as well. I have sent it back to Savage 3 times. Their customer service is lacking. You send it in they send it back with no notes as to what they did or observed. Springfield holds your hand the entire way. They call you when they reicieve it, call you before they start work and ask you to describe the issue, call you when they are done and go over what they did, and send a spec sheet with a target. I am ready to chuck this rifle in the river.

Weird? I sent a model 70 Winchester 300 win Mag back to Winchester. We had words, I could not find anyone that cared. They sent the rifle back in a new box. That was 4 years ago, I decided I should take it to the range. More problems.

I guess nowadays you just drop the big bucks for a custom rifle made by a reputable gunsmith or spend no more than $300 on a factory rifle and roll the dice. The fact that they won't honor a warranty that "handloads" were used on should be a clue as to their confidence in their product.

You're measuring two different ogives and your two measurements are not going to be even close. You have a tangent ogive on the Sierras and a secant ogive on the Hornady. In order to seat the Hornady the same off or into the lands you will have to seat them deeper. Measure to lands with your seating depth guage, and then use comparator to note cartridge oal. for future reference.

THANK YOU! You have no idea how Much better I feel getting an answer that makes sense. This rifle has been the bane of my shooting experiences. I am using a hornady insert. I did what you said for future reference. I also took a look at my hornady manual (I like that one the least) And using the 168 match fmjbt they have a shorter col than SMK's in a different manual. I know the load worker uppers are just using a SAMMI set but it is interesting to note. I am a little concerned that this rifles chamber appears to be on the very low end of SAMMI specs. I know that I would not stand a chance of getting the info from Savage.
Anyway--again I thank you... I knew I would get an answer on this forum.

FYI- Chamber= the section of barrel which encloses the cartridge to restrict case expansion during firing.
Throat - the unrifled section of the bore immediately ahead of the chamber. aka freebore.
You don't have a tight chamber problem...your issues are throat related.

The chamber was too long from the shoulder to the bolt face and the diameter of the chamber was too large. Meaning it was almost impossible to size the case. They suggested I shoot more ammo through the rifle, when I gave have up I had run 120 rounds through it, all new factory Federal GMM.

If you could use your Hornady guage and give us the cartridge overall length to the lands I would appreciate it. Comparator measurements while important to the reloader are of little use to anyone else.
I would also be interested in hearing more about this factory ammo being pulled by the bore upon extraction. That should not happen.

My newest Sav 308 factory barrel has a much shorter throat than its previous editions. Loading most pills at a generic magazine length has most bullets pretty close to the lands. I'm happy with that. Now if yours is shorter than that it could be a problem that shouldn't have left the factory.

I have the same problem. Using hornady 168 bthp match I am at the lands with coal of 2.803. I don't like it. I started a similar thread in the 30 cal section today.

Im thinking about reaming the throat to get more room.
