Tight bolt

I bought a used rifle which I have not fired yet and it came with some twice fired Winchester brass.[6mm Reimington Ackley] I have had the following problem in the past and I stopped using RCBS full lenght dies.
Problem is that the bolt is hard to close.I got the die turned 1/2 turn down with the ram all the way up.I also have annelled the brass. Ok here is where it gets a little crazy.
I have 3 rounds that have been twice fired and chambered great. Smooth and easy. I resized them with the die 3/4 of a turn up from the ram-and now they are hard to chamber.Something is not right and I can't figure it out. Any advice is appreciated, Thanks.

Take a fired case that enters the chamber easily and measure the diameter at the shoulder. Then size the case the same way you did the others. Now measure the shoulder diameter again. If is bigger, there is your problem. The die is trying to bump that 40 degree shoulder and it is, instead, crushing the case causing the shoulder to partially collapse.

If that is not the problem, then I can't help you.

And in a similar fashion; if the body of the case is being sized down it will tend to force the shoulder forward. You need to be sure the shoulder is being bumped back to where it belongs. You can measure the base to shoulder on a fired case and compare that to a resized case. You want around .002" of setback -- you need a stony point HS gauge or something similar to take this measurement.

SF340 is right. You need to measure everything before and after sizing. Take a sized case and paint it with magic-marker and chamber it. That will tell you exactly where the problem is. The Ackley cartridges are great except for that characteristic.

This is your most likely answer...the shoulder is not being moved back...so the case is getting squirted forward giving you the hard chambering...

Sorry for the thread CPR, but I'm currently having the same situation with a 223 AI.....

I had no problems while using a Lee die set but then after receiving a Redding FL die set, I can't get rounds to chamber freely. I can't take any measuremnts at the moment as I don't have any fired cases! ,it's the weather's fault!)

Just wondering if you had made any head way. Thanks in advance for any info.

I'am thinking the case is springing back. After anneling some brass, the bolt seam to close a little easier.Stoney Point must be selling out to Hornady and I can't find a head space gauge for sale. Does anyone know why Wilson dont sell a 6mm Remington improved gauge. Also does anyone know of another way to measure Head spacing on a case? Maybe some one has one for sell?
Thanks Anthony

A sized,so it's truely round) 40S&W or 9mm case slipped over the case neck will work in a pinch. Not quite as accurate, but it works.

Back when I was a Yute I would size each case pushing the shoulder back at least .001 maybe you need .002, ain't gonna hurt. I would cycle each empty case looking for a feel. No good feel back to sizing works great if you have the time. Also I use a Harrel FL die to catch the web. Only other problem could be your bullets are seated tight and long. All this info was for my PPC. More powder.
