tight barrel 22-250 on the savage action

Got to do a lot of shooting yesterday..The tight barrel I've been complaining about is starting to settle down/not any easier to clean but I have good news.. it seems like it will shoot the 60 gr V-max bullet....needs Abit of bullet sorting & I think this savage project gun will make me proud..& it likes H380 at 3500 FPS loading charge..this is very good news because if it would not shoot that velocity or close to it that barrel was getting scrapped[I built this thing to hunt with]..The pic I'm going to post is one you guys will laugh at but it was the best group of the day in that gun..The first & then the 6th shot were off low & left of the group..Oh I was frustrated..I sent the 6th shot down there to try for a mulligan 5 out 6 group but my efforts were frustrated..Next trip to the range I'm going to assemble another batch of this hunting ammo with better case prep..The triming & champhering need attention on this batch of reminton nickel cases..some of the bullets got shaved during seating..I tried to sort them out but most had slight nicks...I should have dumped all the powder charges & did a rechampher on all those necks but..you guys know how time is some days....I'll have more on this project gun later,I put some pics in of the additions I made to this stock mostly the recoil reducer & removable cheek peice...mike in ct

Mike,
I had no ides you could do such nice stock work. How did you learn to do that..

PS. I have six stocks that I have messed up on their way to you to repair.....

Chuck

send em up chuck..I have nothing but time...Send just one..I'll practice on mine..I'm trying to learn how to paint a realistic wood grain finish on that plastic stock..with white line spacers & faux ebony tip...That dam barrel is still aggravating me...See the 6 out of 8 group I shot from a Bipod posted on the bipod thread..The gun hates me...4 of 6 look great last week it wont settle down..& it fouls some..I may resort to a bore polishing & fire lapping...Next week it is going back to being a better behaved 243 winchester..My buddy bob wants to shoot it with the cheek piece removed & no muzzle brake..I think he should shoot it breaked, it is so cool that powerful cartridge & no recoil..Yep I'm old school A belt & suspenders kind of guy..mike in ct

I had fits with a new set up also. 3 months it was a battle. Changed loads, floated barrel, bedded 2X to make sure, Changed more loads. Trigger sears were ground poorly, in my opnion, but I was certain I could get past that. I've shot some really poor trigers in the Army. But bought a Jewell. Tighten and retighten rings, bought ring lapping equipment and alignment tools. At this point I was gonna wrap barrel and rest around tree including the $1100 scope.

POI would be perfect. Quick clean with bore snake and POI of fouling rds off, then groups would tighten then open. Re zero change to different load and POI off.

Re zero kept dirty barrel and POI off. Clean and POI off. Shot 60 rds without break and zero perfect, groups tight. Clean and POI changed. Tight groups would open for new apparent reason.

FINIALLY I gave up. But I did call Leupold and they said send scope in for check. They sent back a note that the erectors were loose. They put in new erectors...

The rifle will now shoot a 10 rd 1" group anytime. 40gr Vmax's at 4110 FPS. It rides in a bag in the back of the SUV daily. I check 2-3 fields I hunt on the way home every night for little Terriosts. I get shots from 75-320 yds without a miss on the last 14 or so. Last night got 2, 1 @ 120 yds and 1 @ 225 yds within 3 minutes of each other.

I shoot from wagons, prone, sitting, offhand, whatever I can get.

I guess the point of this ramble is: it my not be the barrel or the load.

I'm making notes of that harvey...it is a savage action & I have two barrels for it..I'm going to try one more time as a 22-250 then I'll use the 243 barrel to recheck the scope...You saw those groups four out of 6 look great... 6 out of 8 right there..I'm getting cranky about this project..I've only had one 22 250 treat me this badly..it was an El-Cheapo 700 adl plastic stocked wonder..AKA the foula matic..3 shots it was done for..the crud that unit accumilated was nothing short of amazing.it fired patterns not groups...mike in ct
