Thumler's Tumbler Rust Issues - Stainless Pin Cleaning

I use a Thumler's Tumbler with the stainless steel pins for cleaning brass, IMO, works great, no problems.

However, after seeing a post somewhere on line, the poster cautioned about rust under the rubber jacket. Sure enough, I pulled the jacket out and the inner sides and bottom were rusted.

After a good scrubbing, two coats of RustOleum solved the problem, but I'll be pulling the jacket from time to time. A bit surprised that the inside wasn't powder coated, kind of a cheap shortcut by the manufacturer to save a buck.

I'am thinking paint like you mentioned or at least a good shot of WD 40?
Or better yet, pull the liner and run a batch of dry SS Media to get bare metal?

Mine had some right from the start. It would be nice if they would have painted the inside.

It is clear that you should remove the rubber liner after each use, and store the drum dry with the liner out.

An easy way to prevent rust inside the unpainted drum is to spray Boeshield T-9 rust preventer or Eezox spray. I found a can of Boeshield at Sears. This stuff really works - it leaves a waxy film. It was designed by Boeing for aircraft parts. Someone published an exhaustive test of various lubricants (including WD-40, Breakfree CLP and many others). He left pieces of metal out for various time periods after a salt spray and photographed the results. Boeshield T9 was among the best at corrosion prevention. Another good corrosion protectant was Eezox- it is available in a spray can, as well as a liquid.

For the record, I have no connection to whoever makes Boeshield T9 or Eezox. I'm just a skeptical shooter who wants to know "why," and who wants every claim documented. If I can find the corrosion test again I'll post the link here.

To dry the SS pins after each use, just cut a filter cloth from an old bedsheet, place it in a strainer and pour the pins and water through the filter. (Pour most of the water off first.) As the water drips through, sort of like a coffee filter setup, the pins dry out after a few hours.

I saved $200 and made my own which holds more brass and gets the same results, faster, out of materials that are impossible to make rust....I will use anything else other than SS pins to clean my brass though, best method out there IMO.
