Throating Reamers?

Is the PTG and JGS throating reamers similar? The JGS is about $100 more. Any recommendation on what one to get?

The PTG reamers have straight flutes, IIRC, the Manson, like the Clymer's, have a left hand helical flute.

PT&G throating reamers come in many configurations, not just straight flutes. You can order them straight or helical, to what ever degree of angle you specify, piloted or not. You can specify your pilot size down to .0001". Know what to ask for and get what you order. Do your home work, PT&G or any other reamer maker can not read your mind. Different calibers use different degrees of taper. I suggest you talk to Dave Kiff personally if you call PT&G and Dave Manson if you call Manson Precision.

I will try and talk to Kiff this week. I have one ordered and specified a 1.5 degree lead, .2438" FB diameter and that is all she asked.

Since your post, I do have a couple questions and your recommendation is much appreciated.

I simply want this reamer to lengthen the FB diameter of a 6mm Dasher. I have a new reamer, not PTG and the FB length is way short compared to my original PTG reamer. I want to lengthen the length in a separate operation to make it where I want it.

This is for a Dasher and does the 40 degree shoulder pertain to a throating reamer?

Is a spiral flute better for this type of reamer?

Is there anything else I need to bring up when I'm on the phone with kiff?

I do have a bushing i am missing in my set, so I will figure what size I need and specify it.

I don't know why i wasn't asked that, but will make sure I get it specified. Same thing happened when I got a Grizzly rod....I got a .22 caliber sized pilot on a 6mm rod, lol.

Mike, I got a PTG UNI throater with a freebore diameter of .2438".

How well did it match the existing freebore? My concern is to get the throat the exact same diameter as the existing one so that there is no ridge from cutting the throat deeper.

Haven't used it yet, so can't answer that. I'm saying get one the same size as your freebore diameter or a couple tenths over and you should be good. The PTG is a pretty good deal and won't break the bank. What fb diameter is your reamer now?

The throat according to chamber reamer print is .3085'' with a tolerance of +.0004''.
With the same tolerance on the throating reamer it makes sense to add .0002'' to the throater and hope for a good match.

Be very careful using a throating reamer, you can't hardly feel them cutting.
Use a stop if you have one.
