Got my Uni throater from PTG today and opened the pistol barrel up to match my 223 7 twist rifle barrel. Was pretty easy to do once I figured out how to do it without messing it up. Let my Son shoot the first rounds to zero and tweak since he usually beats me at the matches anyway but those last shots were mine so he'll have his work cut out for him this year.
Loaded up about 15 rounds and went down over the hill to see how it would do. Target was 100 yards and after bore sighting and slight tweaking I had enough left to shoot a 4 shot group. Wish I had a 5th but will load a few tonight with different seating depth and powder charges.
This was with 80gr Berger VLDs with 24.5 of Varget seating .010 into the lands, velocity was 2520fps with a 15 7/8" barrel. Think I may try .005 and flush and even .005 off tomorrow. Did my painstaking process of barrel break in meaning I bore sighted it and started shooting. It walked a few rounds then started to settle in with 3 in one hole then 2 in another with enough gap it didn't tear paper into one hole.
This was while we were also playing around with no forward grip pressure, slight rear and slight forward. At the end when I had 4 shots left I kept forward pressure and it seems to like that. 15 rounds isn't enough to go on but it shows promise. I know it's not good groups for what you benchrest guys get but it's a steel plate gun and 1/4" is plenty good to hit what we shoot at.
The fore end is hollow and waiting for my neighbor that makes shot to call back to get a bag to fill the whole front end. I can see the hits now with very little jump but that extra weight should let it sit rock solid steady. Sure is a long way from my old IHMSA unlimited guns but the distance is 5 times as far too.
Hopefully with some tweaking it'll tighten up a bit more and settle into just one nice round hole. I also finished up a Savage Target action 26" rifle to switch back and forth with and it's already proven to be a really good shooter with the Bergers, like to be able to use same loads with same settings in both guns.
