A good friend wants to rebarrel his Sako from 222 to 223 Rem with new custom barrel. I was wanting to ask the professionals here is the rebarrel is a straight forward operation, as I do not own a mill for extractor cuts or the like. The threads are 55 degrees I`m told and is this compensated by the compound?. I know I`m a noob when it comes to something besides a Remington, Stiller, BAT. Thank you!!

I can’t answer any Sako specific questions, but if the threads are 55°, you will need a different thread cutting tool. If you use the compound when threading, you will also need to use a different angle there, 27°.

Tim, I've done a few throught the years. Sako had at least 2 breech's for L461's. One flat and the other with a slight lathe cut recess for the extractor. Either design appears interchangable and use the same bolt. I like the slight recess. Cut everything to .005" clearance and your off and running. I can't find an old barrel in the shop to verify 55 deg, but I always cut them to 60 with no problems. Purist's will probably flame me over that.

If it's the earliest style Vixen with the stamped trigger guard and detachable mag, I've done 1 but it was 15+ years ago, I don't remember the details of that one. Some where in the shop I probably still have the barrel too. If I come across it I'll post what it is.
