Thoughts,suggestions on a 284 reamer design

Hi guys,

I am building a new 284 case/chambered bbl and will also build a 6.5/284 case/bbl later on, using the info below.
Having read numerous post/information that the standard 284 case is a bbl burner, more so than other case designs.

Has anyone taken the standard 284 reamer and moved the shoulder back to get a longer neck length of .400-.420" long, while leaving the overall case length at the standard 2.170" long, and with all other case dimensions the same as OEM?

Any feedback, thoughts, suggestions etc?

Tia,
Don

Welcome Don. The .284 is not known as a barrel burner, even for F-Class (hard on barrels) one should get 2000 rounds of match life. Now, the 6.5x284 on the other hand does have short life, normally 900 rounds or so...

So, most people do not do anything to a .284 chamber to try and get extra life. Personally I am starting to think it is just myth that a longer neck adds to barrel life anyway - this coming from what I am seeing with some folks doing this with 7mm short mags and they are not getting any more like than with a standard neck. As always, your mileage may vary... :)

Tia,

I not sure about what the numbers came out to, but Boyd Mace did the shoulder set back on the .284 case many years ago. I think he started out with a 6mm/.284 short and maybe did a 6.5/.284 as well. Was called the "Badger". I also ran into some guys shooting a 6mm/.284 - .100" short and also the samething .150" short. The short .284 case seriously improved barrel life. In the 6mm these guys said they saw less than 100fps loss in velocity, but better groups.

The standard .284 Winchester is not a barrel burner as mentioned above...
It shoots so good as it is, I never saw any reason to change anything about it, unless I'm changing it to a 25/284 that is.....

a lot of that would depend on what you consider to be a barrel burner. (actually throat burner would be better) I know more than one guy that shoots the 6.5/.284 in F class, and most switch barrels at around the 1000 round mark. One guys gets about 1200 to 1400 rounds per tube, and I know a couple others that are seeing about 800 rounds. A 6mm/.284 is a well known barrel burner, and is greatly overbore. A fine example of this is when the guy pushed the shoulder back .100" and lost less than 75fps. Yet the one guy that pushed the shoulder back .150" saw a loss of about 90fps. Yet went from five to six hundred rounds max to well over 1500 rounds anyway (last time I spoke with him). yet the same round in a 6mm AI will easilly go 2000 rounds without a whimper. (Ackley said the standard 6mm Remington was about the max a 24 bore could handle) The 6mmAI is a little overbore, but not greatly overbore like a 6mm-06 would be. Yet looking at the terminal velocities we see little difference between the 6/.284 and the 6mmAI. Taking this a step further up the ladder we compair the 6.5/.284 and the 6.5-06. Both have similar case capacitys and both have similar velocties. But one has a much longer barrel life even though the case is very slightly greater in capacity. The longer neck would be the answer here. The 6.5AI probably has double the barrel life of the 6.5/.284 with about 250fps greater velocity. (Hornaday manual shows the 6.5-06 to be a little faster than the .284 case, and the Ackley version of the 6.5-06 will be about 100 fps faster)
