Thoughts on the new Lapua 6.5X47

I have a few thoughts and more than a few questions that may be answered as time goes on.

Thought #1: I feel that Lapua went with a large primer pocket and large flash hole because the case was designed for 6.5 bullets, NOT 6mm. Many will be necking it down to 6mm and I feel it won't work as well as a small primer pocket, small flash hole case due to being designed for the larger 6.5 projectile.

Thought #2: I feel that the case will not have enough volume to handle the wonderful Sierra 142 grain Match King that works so well in the 6.5X284. In fact it may very well be limited to 135 grain or less bullets to achieve enough velocity for longer range work out to say 600 yards. Again Lapua designed this with 300 meter competitions in mind.

Question #1: Do you agree with the above, or am I all wet as usual? LOL!

Question #2: Considering this a 600 yard cartridge, and not a 1000 yard cartridge, which way would you go?

6 or 6.5?
Bullet weight?
Estimated velocity?

Question #3: Some of you with sophisticated ballistic programs can you guesstimate answers to question number 2?

Danny -- I agree on the 142...but who knows.

I will have one of each to play with ;)

Tubb also went with large FH and PP on the XC for various reasons, and with a similar capacity, lapua followed suit, so it must mean something...

I think the 6mm will be great to 1K and the 6.5/123 scenar combo would be killer to 600+

So.....Do you think this will be a killer in 6mm with 105,107,115's? I have a new 8twst that I was going to chamber for a Dasher. When the news of the new Laupa case came out I decided to wait. I am going to build one regardless, any thoughts on reamers and dies?

"Reliable ignition" comes to mind. Above 35 grains powder capacity, a small primer may not have enough "oomph" to light off the powder consistently. Some shooters that used .308 BR brass for .308 said that under certain conditions,i.e., cold weather), they would get hangfires. Use of the Remington primer, hotter primer) helped, but I think even this wasn't a 100% solution.

Reamers won't be a problem. Sounds like Dave Kiff has those bases covered. Dies on the other hand will be costly at first. Custom all the way unless some forward thinking Manufacturer gets ready now. Anybody from Redding listening out there????????
I still wish they'd have gone with a longer neck, ala 6BR. Would not have been a problem....oh well.

I think a 6.5x47 necked down to 6x47 Swiss match configuration which similar to 6xc from what I understand would be nice if throated correctly for 115 Bergers.

Of course I am idea rich and cash poor as many of us are. Big there here is that if the quality of this brass is up to their usual standards it would give you semi .243 performance with less powder...yes I know it wouldn't top a .243 but get ya close enough.

I ran the number and with Ramshot hunter and moly coated 115 bergers out of a 30 inch barrel I could achieve 3000 fps according to QL...of course you would have to shoot it to verify, but with a BC of .595 or so I think it would be killer.
