Thoughts on the 30x47

Which 30x47? I have the one made off the 300 Savage case with the shoulder pushed back about 10 thousands inch but leaving the case the same OAL. Picked it up in an estate sale of an old bench rest shooter. He had just had it built for hunter class matches and was shooting it with cast bullets for some reason just before he had a heart attack and died. Gun was built back in the early 1980s on a Ruger 77 action with a Canjar trigger. I got it cheap and it had the dies and all the load data the fellow had been working with and about 150 cases. It is a shooter with about anything I have tried in it. I don't shoot bench rest with it but do use it to deer hunt etc. with. A case full of IMR 4895 and a 125 Nosler BT is wicked on deer.

Why make a wildcat when the .308 W is around with big & small primer cases? Heck, if you want to toss bucks around, I'll register as a charity.

Thinking about a 30x47

I was thinking about it based on the 6.5x47 case.

The 30x47 is/was the darling of Hunter Benchrest, displacing the 308 from the top.

Whether you make them from, 300 Savage, 308, or 6.5x47, they all are a 1.850" case length. With the coming of the 47 Lapua, the hassles of case forming went down the dumper.

Velocities will be 100 to 200 fps below a full length 308, depending on bullet weights, with a resulting decrease in recoil.

I dont see any reason why to play with that cartridge. It sounds cool but I don't think it has any practical advantages over a 308 win. Just my 2 cents.

My thought on the 30x47 lapua is DO IT!

30BR is wicked accurate and pushes a 115gr range bullet close to 3000fps, add a bit more boiler room, and you got the same bullet going over 3000fps easy... (talking 1:17 twist area)... only thing that can keep you from doing it is money... it will shoot good... nothing but money keeps me from doing something like this...

I have two 30x47. One with 17 twist and I shoot 115 Berger FB with very good accuracy 100-300 m short benchrest. My load is around 40,2 VV N 135. I also have a brand new 12 twist, Jury (canadian barrel) 24,4" HV profile and with that one I shoot 168 Berger Hybrid, just now trying VV N 140 around 38,5-40 grains. I say go for it. Plenty of good bullets, great cases, excellent barrel life.

Close to 3000? There are 2 nodes that most guy's use, 2975 to 3000, and 3050 to 3070ish and a few hot nodes over 3100. With the current lot of N130 that PV sells, 35.7 in my 22.5 new Krieger averages 3076fps with a 115 10X. I've run 36.2 in my older Lilja same length and was avg 3112. Lew I ran a 30x46 last year in VFS at 2 & 300 yards and did fairly well with it. Ran 43.5 grains of N133, with a Bart 112 X-Outs, out of a 22.5" 16TW Hart with an Ezell tuner. That load out of that barrel averaged 3210 and I still have a little more room in the case, but it did so well with that load, there was no need to try anything else. Just for shits and giggles I've managed to get 45 grains in with a 12" drop tube just to see how much would fit in that case with a wee bit of room to seat a bullet.

Yeahhh... everything you said is circa 3000...

There is a difference between close to 3000 and over 3100. The way your post sounded you made it sound like a 115 at close to 3000 was close to being maxed out in the BR case, and with the addition of the bigger boiler room of the 30x47 with the same 115 bullet you could push it over 3000 easy. Fact is you can push it over 3250 very easy in a 30x47 case. I hope Randy Robinette chimes in on this. He'll tell you that there was a guy named Dave Grene who use to use a case full of H4198 using a 125 grain bullet exclusively in his 30BR and he was getting 3150fps out of it and winning a fair share of matches with it.
