thoughts on newly acquired gun

hi, I have recently acquired a target rifle from a late uncle. specs are:

hammonds rifle- 6mm br (lapua .262 neck) 1375 witchita action-jewell trigger
21" hart (I think) stainless 1 in 14 twist- 5 lands-1.250 to .900 taper (as close as I can measure glued into stock)
black kelby spg-fb stock- leupold fx-3 12 X 40 scope-weight 10lbs- rounds down tube?????

and all the accessories, dies, bullets, powder, primers, cases, neck turning tools, measuring tools. could not find any of his load data really do not know if he had it wrote down, probably did I just did not find it. remember seeing the gun when I would visit and get talking guns but just never kept that gun info in my head of all the specifics, never really expected to end up with it. gunsmith bore scoped it and said it looks real good. no one I can find knows any of its history. wished I would have paid more attention when we talked. we lived in the southeast part of Pa. his name was Ollie Kohl, he was into competition in his early years, heck maybe some one on here might even recognize him. I have played with it some and at 100yds. it shoots in the mid .100s to the mid .200s in ideal conditions. i was wondering what class would a gun like this shoot in for competition, official matches or local club matches.

Put a different scope on it and you can shoot in NBRSA or IBS 100-200 yard group or score and UBR score. Every local match's rules are different. No way to know there except that the short stubby bullets that it is set up for will run out of gas at 300 yards or so,

I suggest you visit the forum onhttp://www.benchrest.com. If you post a query with this information there, you may encounter responses from folks that knew your uncle or at least the builder of your rifle. It sounds as though you have a slightly vintage short range Bench Rest rifle that would be used for NBRSA or IBS competition at ranges of 100 - 300 yards (mostly 100 - 200). 36 power or higher scopes are the norm. The 6 PPC is favored over the 6 BR for the shorter ranges.

You've got yourself a 6PPC Light Varmint Competition rifle with the traditional tight-neck .262" chamber that you'll have to turn necks for after you've necked up Lapua 220 Russian brass.

It was built by Charence Hammonds a well known "B"enchrest competitor and gunsmith.

You can shoot this rife in local, regional, national and world competition matches [if you've got the talent].

Everything you need to know about the 6PPC including load data can be quickly found here: http://www.accurateshooter.com/cartridge-guides/6mmppc/

The BIBLE on the 6PPC is acquired here: http://www.rifleaccuracybook.com/

He said it was 6 BR. Better check, though. Easy enough to find out. That Wichita is,a piece of history...
