Thompson center compass rifle

Yes, But you can buy a new one for half the price. Call Thompson (S&W) and ask about rebarreling.

Well since almost no one does it notice I said almost no one I say go for it.

It is no worse from a design standpoint that super expensive custom actions like the Terminus that copies the Savage floating bolt head. It has a bar stock action like a Remington 700. Recoil lug a Tikka. 3 Lug bolt like a lot of premium factory actions and custom actions from USA and Europe! A trigger that is easy to tune and get done to about 2 to 2.5lbs. with a good break with just a spring change and adjustment. If you want a different bolt handle no welding skills or machine tool needed!

The large bolt body and bolt head design are really good. People misunderstand how fantastic this action is from a design stand point. Sure not a lot of after market support and S&W did not do a great job on execution but the bones of the action are solid.

The design of the action is actual a better design for tuning it or blueprinting than say a Mauser or a Winchester Model 70 Pre-64. Is it as fantastic of a design as the Mauser or Win Mod 70 heck no! That said it can be made cheaply and it can likewise be accuraized easily!

It is a very sound design even if it is not that well executed. I would bet that if someone just laped the lugs and touched off the reviever face and did a very good job cutting a nice chamber and fiting the barrel nicely you could see a huge leap in performance.

Remington 700's where not that great as they left the factory from an accuracy stand point but boy could they be made to shoot in the hands of a decent gunsmith and a decent barrel!

I am sure that some green sand and the allow of your choice one could make a nice trigger guard.

The bigest limits are lack of solid bottom metal and a lack of good after market magazines that fit it or OEM magazines. Sure you can put it in a Oryx and probably use an ACIS mag but price jumps a lot to go that route. Boyds makes a stock and triggerguard but you are still stuck with the plastic factory magazine and trying to get the magazine depth right to feed reliably in the Boyds stock.
