I thought this would be a fun thread to see how the harvest is doing this year on deer species.I got a double up here in new york with a nice typical 6 poiter and a big older doe.1 neck shot on the buck and he dropped like wet cement. The doe was a double lung and top of the heart and she snow plowed 50 feet(i have never seen this happen before) and she died in seconds. How did we all do? This is not a bragging thread ,just for fun! My gun is an older benelli m1 super 90 smooth bore with pistol grip factory stock,I get alot of looks from others met in the field when they see it. It is 12 gage as shotgun is the only allowed weapon up here in upper new york between buffalo and rochester etc.

Hey jon,
Neat thread, I haven't went hunting yet will start thanksgiving morning. My wife shot her deer oct. 12th I think it was.127yds heart/lung shot with her browning 7mm-08, reared over backwards then rolled down the hill 25 yds, dead where he landed ;) I was proud of her as it was here first deer all by herself. My cousin shot her deer w/my Tikka T3 7mm-08 @ 355 yds, both lungs, went about 20 yds then tipped over, doa. My son and I muzzle load for deer so there won't be any long range shots but I hope to have a nice whitetail story for you in a few days.

I had a Benelli super 90 once and used it for waterfowling. Great gun. only wished I'd gotten it in 20 ga (I'm a 20 fan). For deer this year I used my Blaser R93 with a short, moderated barrel.

Went out for 3 weeks and got well over 40 deer this year. I'm using the Hornady Amax bullet and finding it perfect, have shot deer at all kinds of distances with it. I previously used the Nosler BT and Hornady Vmax with similar results.

Here's a picture of "dog" finding a shot deer for me; he usually makes sure it's dead before comig back to get me.

Our season here in Pa. starts next monday, I will be checking my trail camera early tomm. morning before Thanksgiving festivities start. I have not seen, but landowner where I hunt has seen a very large 10 point a few times, and I have found his scrapes, rubs etc. where he hangs out. Got my stand up near his core area, and will be up in the stand with bells and whistles ;D early am monday with my Rem 700 which I had rebarreled to .308 with a match chamber 24 inch Brux barrel. 6.5-20 Leupold on top, shooting 155 Berger Hunting VLD's. After lurking here for a few years, I finally joined site this past summer, and started getting into some match rifle shooting. I am now addicted!! Love this site and everyone here have a Happy Thanksgiving!!

I love the idea of using the silencer(moderator). Here in the state's you have to get a class 3 firearms license which is only available in 38 state's.Our liberal government thinks they are evil.If we used them and were allowed to,maybe I could hear better and not have ringing in my ears for the rest of my life. By the way how many deer are you allowed to take in norway? We can take up to 3 here in new york state with a gun.

A moderator/silencer really is a great tool, typically reduces 26-32 dB with a quality moderator (sound is halfed every 3 dB). Hearing protection is the greatest benefit. Unlike some people believe, it's not "Hollywood-quiet". The supersonic crack is still there so I use digital Sordin hearing ear defenders as well. The Sordins are really a great product and you sound look into those before you get a hearing disability.

As an added bonus the deer stays quiet or at least confused so you often get 2 or 3 chances in the same situation.

The property which I hunt cull 4-600 deer every year. I believe roughly 150 is shot by visiting hunters, some 200 by the professional hunter and the "winter hands" (amongst them me) take out the rest. Most of the meat is exported to Germany.

Pretty good season for me. Made my longest shot (569 yard doe) and got my biggest buck (151-2/8" gross at 160 yards) to date. Two shots, two deer, and they took a combined ZERO steps. Shooting the stainless Rem 700 LA with a 27" shilen 8 twist in 280AI that I built. It has a Boyds Featherweight thumbhole stock and a 4-16x50 Nikon Monarch BDC scope. I was very skeptical about using the 168gr Berger VLDs but am now a firm believer in them.

I would post pics if i was smart enuff!!! :-[

Roe,do you get to keep some of the meat I hope? I want to come over there and help you out.LOL

Gun season opened this past Sat. here in AL. I saw several does, but did not shoot. Waiting for a nice buck, but will harvest two or three does before the season's over- Jan. 31st. We can take three bucks per year and a doe every day. Up until about three years ago, we could take a buck and a doe per day. Satuday my hunting buddy missed a big buck with a black powder handgun. Was a little too late and could not see his front sight clearly enough. Was trying to reload when it finally ran off. I hunt with several different rifles and my main hunting rifle is a Savage md.16? stainless synthetic with a Leupold VXIII 3.5X10 in 270 wsm. Every deer I've shot so far has dropped right there. 130gr. Nolser BT at 3280fps does the job for me.

Good luck, have fun and most of all, be safe.

Phillip

Great thread and great replies.

This year was a pretty special season for me because my wife took her first deer. It was a nice 200lb Mulie doe at about 200 yards. Rifle is a semi-custom Savage .243, using hanloads with Sierra 100grn GameKings the doe dropped like a stone.

We had a great year here in Utah! My wife took her little 3x3 buck at 258 with a Tikka 6.5 Swede loaded with a 130 VLD, DRT. My boy and I used the same rifle to harvest both of our bucks. He was toting a 25-06 loaded with 115 VLD's but didn't hesitate to use my 300 RUM when we spotted his buck. His shot was an impressive 723 yards! One shot across the canyon and the 168 VLD did the rest! My buck was taken at 465ish with a single 168 VLD also from my 300 RUM.

Oct. 2010 3 deer, 2 young Bucks and a nice doe in 45 minutes. .260 Remington on a Mauser I built with 140 Amax's.

My wife got her first bow season deer (doe) this year. In my county, we can only take doe with a bow. She was hunting a Primos ground blind using a Wicked Ridge Crossbow I got her a few months back. There were several times the deer were very close. A button buck walked up within 4 feet of her and she could count its eye lashes. She said she was surprised it couldn't hear her heart pounding. The blind windows were open and he was looking straight at her through the window for about 20 seconds. She didn't move and it did not figure out what she was. She took the doe at 30 yards with a perfect quartering away shot. Now its rifle season and she has her eyes on one we call "Old 8" and is passing up on all the others. She is in the stand every morning and has seen him several times but has not been presented with a good shot (yet). She shoots a .257 Weatherby Mag I load with 115 Berger VLD. I enjoy seeing her hunt just as much as if I was doing the hunting. She never hunted until we god married 8 years ago and good for me, she just loves it!

just easier than typing it all again

I read your story Tyler, sounds like you had a awesome day,Great shooting by the way. You could have just copied and pasted, no matter its a great story.

jon,
No need to clean the flash pole with the compressor I emptied it into a 4x4 @ 1:30 this afternoon, so I will give her a good cleaning this evening and put her up for the year. My son could have shot the little buck I shot but he is holding out for the big one :D I usually hold out for a while, but the weather has been bad and my mother in law has been ill so I might not have as much time to hunt as usual so I ended it on opening day and that is a definite first for me. Well my son and I are bacheloring
while the wife sits with her mother,so I guess I better get off of here and go fix us some Thanksgiving dinner :) Oh great thread jon I wish they were all like this one.
Wayne.

One 6 pt. with the 338 Win. Mag. ( just wanted to have fun) and three does with the 270. All four were heart shots between 200 - 250 yards. All deer ran at least 50 yards.

Passed 4, 8 pts or larger, while waiting for Mr. Big. Will do more "waiting" in a couple weeks.

Wayne congratulations on a fine animal harvested . My exwife just shot a dandy 8 pointer.I got my double on the second day of our season in the peoples republic of new york,LOL. So I am done basically. It went down textbook. When I have more time I will tell the whole story and describe the behavior that I witnessed the doe's doing in front of me while the buck layed just 20 yds away from them. The shotgun blast didnt even scare them. Really weird. I hope you have a nice dinner,I envy you as my son has no interest in hunting anymore. His bhong(bong) is more important. To each his own but I will never understand it. Have a good one.
