This is what you do when your bored...

I had a guy at the range with a 6.5 Creedmoor give me a box of 6mm Creedmoor loaded ammo with 5 missing (don't ask where those are...) this ammo is Hornady "Black" store bought ammo. I have shot this stuff before with ok results but this I decided to pull the bullets and reseat them to where my rifle likes them, which is closer to the lands. While the bullets are out I decided to measure the charge weight in each one and they really not as close as I thought they would be.

That looks about right for mass produced ammunition.

I am sure they have some type of automatic powder dispenser that works on gravity, just like any other powder dispenser from the cheapest to the most expensive. Anybody that has sat down with any brand of Powder dispenser and thrown 100 charges, weighing each with a quality scale, will know that +-.2 is about the norm.

Now you need to check the bullets, and check back. LOL Tommy Mc

While we’re on this subject, what is the consensus on resetting factory loaded rounds. I’ve thought about doing it to making a longer overall length, but was afraid the RBCS collet puller might distort the bullet too much.

I pull bullets with a collet occasionally, and have no qualms about shooting them.
I try to only tighten collet enough to grip bullet, not so much to distort it.

Try measuring seating depth for commercial ammunition loaded rounds sometime. It can be an eye-opening experience. Even brands reputed to be of very high quality/precision don't pass muster for what is generally expected from a good handload. Commercial ammunition preps are not going to be perfectly optimized for any specific rifle setup. The goal is for them to shoot at least reasonably well out of a very wide range of different rifle setups. As such, the tolerances held are generally not on par with handloads, not even close.

Thanks, I may try it on a few factory .223 rounds loaded with 69 grain SMK bullets. As of now they measure.075 to .1 short of my hand loads touch point.

I remember when Hornady first came out with the ELD-M in loaded ammo.
Though I'd try a box.
Lucky they were loaded long and I could "shorten" them up to match my jump.
It only helped a little, since the powder weights as you see are all over the place.
That's why we hand load. Leave as little to chance.

Not even a little bit surprised. I have seen 250 fps delta between 3 rounds of Hornady Superformance 30-06 150 gr

I had the same issue and saw that PMA makes a bullet puller that leaves the bullets in really good shape and you don't have to pull the bullets all the way out. You can control how much you pull the bullet out of the case very simply. They do require a little more effort if the bullet is crimped.

why would you need to completely pull the bullets just to seat them longer? One solid rap in an inertia puller would have brought them out far enough to reseat at your desired longer length. Use a fine line marker to put a partial line around the bullet against the case neck for reference to see that the bullet has moved enough.

But then you wouldn't have had the fun of weighing the powder.
