Thinking of using Duracoat on stainlees- thoughts?

Thinking of trying Duracoat flat black on a rifle I'm putting a stainless barrel on. The goal is to have an even finish over the blued receiver and the stainless barrel. Planning to use their Shake N' Spray kit.

From everything I've found so far it seems like a pretty straightforward process, rough up the surfaces a little, clean and degrease and then apply the finish.

The kit includes a degreaser, what would be a good product to use in addition to it, as a pre-cleaner to get most of the grime, grease etc off?

Has anyone done this, how did it go, any tips?

I used it on one of my F Class rifles and it didn't work so well. I stripped it and had a local guy do a Cerakote. Life is good again.

These days, I just leave my barrels bare. Less hassle.

Thanks for the post. I usually leave my barrels bare as well. This being a hunter I thought it would be fun to try matte finish. Hopefully it takes.

If you want you can put Mossy Oak camo tape on the stainless barrel and receiver. Did this to my shotgun works just fine-$25 for kit plus shipping.

I've gone the Duracote route on Chromemoly (professionally applied & baked) Have also tried w/ my air brush. Results similar in appearance. Recently tried Ceracote baked. (recommended for stainless) MUCH more durable finish. Have you considered Aluminum oxide blasted finish to knock down the shine? Really easy to touch-up should the need arise.

Talkled to Duracoat's tech support and they suggested blasting the stainless to rough up the surface. They said 120grit al oxide is the best media to use but that regular silica will work as well. A buddy has a cabinet so when the barrel arrives we're going to see if will fit.

I had 3 done, 2 were benchrest take-offs and the other a Remington SS take-off. Had them done at the Trade school here in Denver, worked fine. I shoot prairie dogs and didn't want them shinning in the Colorado sun.

One done in a matte black and the others done in a Tactical black. Don't see a lot of difference. They were spray on, no bake.

Thanks for the reply. I'm probably going to at least mock up the barrel in the action so that I can bed the stock before blasting it. That way I'm not having to re-clean it and not handling the blasted surfaces too much.

Which trade school did you use? I didn't go to school in Denver but lived in Wash park for about ten years.

I have a couple of hunting rigs, stainless barrels and Duracoat. One has been used a lot for 5 years now and has spent a fair share of those days on a horse in a scabbard. The finish is holding up well, but it was baked on and I did not do the work. I think it was parkerised and or bead blasted first.

I really like the cerakote as it is so thin with very little build up,you could almost coat everything on the rifle.Duracoat is great but I am on the fence as to which one will take the abuse from daily usage.I once saw an ar-15 done up with dura coat and to be honest,it looked fantastic.

Did duracoat on a stainless Kreiger barrel on my F-class gun. Surface must be sandblasted matte first then cleaned thoroughly. I use an airbrush; worked beautifully and after it's cured it's very tough. Do it right and end up with a fantastic finish. Best of luck.

Had it done a few years ago one one of my rigs. Pretty durable with just a couple of chips on the barrel. They recommended Parkerizing first.

When I did get tired of it, it was not that easy to remove.

Side note, but anybody have any experience with how Ion-Bond compares with Cerakote on ss barrels?

Well I went ahead and gave it a try. Seems to take pretty well, time will tell how it stands up. The load needs a little work but the finish came out well.

Thanks for the reply. Its just a regular long action and haven't had any feeding troubles at all. Wanted the flexibility the longer mag length gives and couldn't be happier. Have heard folks talk about the weight, bolt throw, rigidity etc of long action vs short action and think its rubbish.
