thinking of the 6mm SLR

I don't have a 243 anymore bit A LOT of brass and was thinking of the SLR !!.I have read the article on it bit was wondering what you all thought about it? And is it worth building and how would you set it up?....thanks

I never cared for the plain old 243 with the steep shoulder and short neck, but the 6SLR changed all that in a hurry. It's a sweet heart of a cartridge and is easy to load for, pop 43.5 grains of H-4831 SC in a 243 case
that was run though a die, and seat a 105-108 grain bullet in it and see the accuracy show up right away...
It even likes that same load with a 87 grain Hornady.....
I'll never be without one again.....

I decided that I want a repeater .243" rifle.

Was thinking about 6X47 lapua, but many says its a tricky round to find a accurate load.

The rifle will be used for 300 to 600 yards competition, but no BR or variations are allowed

So, what advantage I got with 243 SLR X 243 Winchester?

Barrel life, accuracy...

Listen to Preacher. I have one and its a hammer!! I can shoot .7 to 1.5" groups all day off the hood of my PU at 300yds. My barrel has 3300 rounds through it. Its on its 3rd set back. It started life as a 6XC then went to the 6SLR at around 900rds and it just keeps shooting!!! I shoot H1000 in mine and it loves H4831 too but the H1000 burns cooler and is damn accurate too. Its very easy to get to shoot. I shot 105HYBs, and 107MKs and 115DTACs a 5 shot group of each and the average for the 15 rounds at 300yds was exactly 1". You just can't beat that!!

As I have never seen a 6 SLR , need more information.

Is formed from 243 Winchester brass? What abouth neck lenght? Is the same? The 243 Winchester already is on small side....

Think of a 243 with a 6XC top...shoulder angle and nice long neck. In fact prior to Dies being available, the 6XC FL die was used to size cases.

Longer neck, no "fire forming" as you size down not up, somewhat less capacity, less shoulder angle so it will feed better (30* vs 40*) from a mag. There are several options for 6s based on either the 243 or the 6.5x47L case.

Same question. Sounds like my 87 gr. V-Maxes might work. Wondering about something like 70 gr. NBTs.
Any neck problems with Nosler brass, which I have.

Guess I don't really want to turn my handy, reasonably-accurate .243 Sako into a full-blown BR rifle that only shoots 100+ grain VLDs. Just no pleasing some people, right? :

I'd think that the SLR would be an ideal case for a lighter bullet. Slightly less capacity than the 243 probably means more efficient. If you got it with the correct throat and twist I can't see why it wouldn't be a great setup.

There are three JGS reamer prints out there for the round. I know that two have 90 and 120 freebores, but there is another that has a shorter freebore that would probably be what you'd be looking for if you want to shoot the lighter bullets.

My SLR was built because I wanted easy! Since I was a nubie to reloading, match shooting, and any kind of repeatable accuracy this looked like it would fit the bill and be easy! Wow! It works for me so well.

It runs cheap or expensive brass, it like lots of different powders. It feeds excellent. I've played in a number of different long range games with mine and continue to be impresses with the round. I don't see why you couldn't run lighter bullets as long as you used the correct twist barrel. It isn't a bench rest round, but it's crazy accurate and my barrel life has been great...2500+ before decide to set it back.

To use this round over a straight 243, you have only one extra step...the initial sizing...of course if you size you new 243 brass then no extra step...and brass doesn't seem to grow.......did I mention easy!

I also have the parts to build a new 6mm Ackley that I was going to set up for heavy pills. That's why I asked about setting the SLR up for light bullets..didn't think there was a reason to set both up for heavy bullets.

Hmmm since I set my slr up for long range comp, I never tried any thing smaller than 105s. The slow powders that work with this round give it great barrel life.

I don't know much about the Ackley, does it have better barrel life with light or heavy rounds?

Steve Blair is the go to guy on the 6MM Ackley. He knows that round inside out, but then again, I'd bet he is that way with every cartridge he shoots.

I just had one built and i have it broken in.I had a question for you guys that have them and it looks like they reality shoot well. I am loading once fired and I am going to neck size them. My question is how far down the neck do you go to resize and what is the inside diameter of the neck? I will be trying the 105's and 108's. Is a inch and half three shot group out of question at 700 yards with the 6-SLR?
