Thinking of going supressed.

So I've been doing some searching and reading and I think I want to give this a shot. I think I have the how to and how much thing figured out but I have a couple questions I want help with.

#1 I am a class 07 FFL. Do I still need to go through all the background crap to get one or is it similar to selling a firearm to someone with a CCW? just check the box and done?

#2 I don't have a local NFA dealer here so what are your experiences with online purchases? Would it be better to make the 3ish hour trip to the nearest dealer?

#3 I have hunting rifles from .223-.280 Ackley and a .308 Win. I don't anticipate ever owning a .300 win or larger just not my cup o tea. Barrel lengths range from 20" on a .22-250 to 26". I do 90% of my hunting with a 6mmXC or .260 Ackley both are currently threaded 5/8-24 with brakes. I am looking hard at the Gemtech line of supressors but looking for some input on what might be the best can for my needs. Thanks.

I also have been considering this.... Myself I would like to deal with it in person so I can look at the product I am buying , touch it and check it over... Plus have an actual person to talk with if there's a problem... I would hate even think of what it would be like to return something like that to an online place....

I would strongly recommend starting with a .30 cal suppressor (5/8 x 24tpi) that will provide you with maximum flexibility between caliber usage. It is more than acceptable on smaller calibers, such as .223 and will carry you all the way out to 300 WinMag. Since you already have an assortment of rifles that you want to use it on there are two (2) considerations: (1) Type of mount and (2) weight.

(1) There are two types of mounts: Quick Detach (QD) mounts or Direct Thread (DT).
QD's are great for moving the supressor between a couple of rifles. Keep in mind that this means you will need to buy a separate QD Mount ($75) for each rifle that you might want to use the suppressor on. The QD mount/break is loctite on your barrel so that it will not unscrew when you are taking the suppressor off the gun. I prefer this mount on my AR's as the high volume shooting and recoil of the semi-auto has a tendency to shake things loose.

Direct thread is simplest and works well for bolt rifles. There is no additional cost for a mounting unit for each rifle and it is just more streamline. Also, in most cases the weight of the DT suppressor is a little less than the QD suppressor with QD mount. Direct thread can be used without a problem on an AR platform..every once in a while give it a nice twist to make sure threads are snug.

(2) Weight is a big concern relating to Point of Impact (POI) shift so think about titanium construction. The impact of suppressor weight becomes amplified with lighter profile barrels, especially as they heat up from being fired... gets really whippy. In some cases the factory sporter barrel profile may not be thick enough at the muzzle to be threaded securely (enough barrel thickness in order to cut threads and also provide a shoulder to butt up the rear of the suppressor). This is just something to keep in mind...not all rifle barrels are good candidates for suppressors... this also includes pencil profile barrels (ultra-light) in AR15s that are notoriously bad POI.

For me buying a Suppressor is like buying a precision scope....spend the money on the front end to get the best quality product that you can afford (lowest weight with best sound reduction).

If you are going to buy a direct thread then the gold standard is a Thunderbeast Ultra 9 in .30 cal. You will not regret it!!!

As far as online purchasing...it can be trusted and you can have your suppressor transferred to your local gunshop to be held in their safe until ATF approves the stamp (form 4). Take a look at Silencershop (largest online retailer...like 50% of market)... they also have a trust document that you can use.

Once you go to a suppressor you will be hard pressed not to want to shoot everything with one on it. Good Luck!

just buy a can and never look back. if its for hunting i would look at a TBAC Ultra 5 30cal and you can also just form 1 a can for the time being to get by.

Form 1 is for making your won suppressor. I shot with Shane Coppinger, in the Navy. He's one of the owners of Thunderbeast. He says the Ultra 7" even on a .300 win Mag. He hunts with and Ultra 5 on a .300 winch.

I've been considering getting a suppressor, and after seeing that the Silencer Shop is all of a 15 minute drive away, this might just push me off high center.

I have the older 30P-1 (predecessor to the Ultra 9, and I will take the extra length for the added sound suppression. I can shoot all day long with a light pair of plugs to offset the supersonic crack. I have the Ultra 7 (.223 cal) and it is fantastic and amazingly light.

Most likely you will spend most time using the suppressor at the range and the few hunting trips where the extra 2-4" of length will be a minor inconvenience. My preference is if you are only buying one can then buy the maximum noise reduction. If you own several then go ahead and buy the short 5" to take some of the edge off the blast, but not hearing safe. There are some sound comparisons of different length suppressors that are worth reviewing.

Around minute 6:30 the video goes into decibels results of each the Ultra 9, Ultra 7 and Ultra 5

Also, check out Capitol Armory, which is just around the corner in Cedar Park. Both companies provide quality service and great prices.

Ohh heck Texas check out Brothers in arms outside Bastrop , they have the silenco machine in shop...you do it all there as easy as buying gas... I love Texas.... Just a thought.... It doesn't get any easier....

#1 I am a class 07 FFL. Do I still need to go through all the background crap.
YES. And for each time you want a suppressor.

#2 I don't have a local NFA dealer here so what are your experiences with online purchases? Would it be better to make the 3ish hour trip to the nearest dealer?
YES. There are a lot of things that have to be done correctly. The dealer is your friend.

#3 I have hunting rifles from .223-.280 Ackley and a .308 Win.
Get a Gemtech 300 Win Mag capable can. It will work on all your centerfires.

I have 4 TBACs and wouldn't look at anything else. As far as your needs, go with the largest you can. A 30 cal Ultra will do 3 things.
1- larger volume will be quiter and allow for more gas expansion.
2- If you ever decide to go bigger, your
covered.
3- TBAC quality and customer service sets
the bar high.
My buddy uses a 338 can on his 6BRA!
It's ridiculously quite.

I have a Silenerco Harvester 300, use it on a 204R, 223 & 22/250. All were threaded 5/8-24 on 26" barrels. You can get different thread adapters for it to fit on smaller calibers that are pre-threaded, but my barrels were not so I just picked one size fits all. People at the range say my 204R sounds like a mouse fart with it screwed on. Very versatile suppressor.

Make sure and do a trust, you'll be glad that you did.

Bastrop would be a beautiful hours drive in the Texas back country. I'll bring my bass boat and do some fishing while I'm down there. I've taken some real lunkers in Bastrop lake.
