Thinking of building a 6mm SLR.

My Rock 6mm 1-8tw barrel should be here in a couple weeks and now I'm debating on what to chamber it in. I'm thinking 243AI or 6mm Slr. I already have the redding ackely dies but I really dont like fireforming or neck turning. What does it run to buy the reamer, go gauge, and dies for the Slr?

My `smith is building me a 6 SLR, 30 inch 8 twist barrel, squared 722 action.

PT&G sells the reamer for $165 but watch their specials. I hit a special at $135. The GO gauge is $27.

I am using 6XC dies to push the shoulder and load. Sinclair sells 6XC Redding competition neck bushing die set for $204.95 which contains body die, neck die and micrometer seater.

Redding makes a custom die set for the 6SLR but I haven`t got that far yet as to price.

The 6 SLR is your best bet if you dont want to fireform and do all the bother that goes with it.. I have just started to do the break in on my 6SLR and it's doing a great job so far... 43.5 grains of H4831SC & the 105 A-max is a eye opener.....

Just a note about reamers: The reamer used in my 6SLR in the Gun-Of-The-Week article was chambered with a JGS reamer. I'm pretty sure that PREACHER is also using a JGS reamer. I am not aware of the differences between the JGS and the PT&G reamer but you may want to e-mail Robert Whitley and ask.

I have shot both and love the 6mmSLR its easy to load for and shoots great!! You can make your brass by just sizing a case and it shoots as well as a formed case.

I didnt realize the dies would cost $200 dollars now I'm thinking maybe since I have the Ackley dies I should go that route and put the extra money I would have towards a jewel trigger. Decisions decisions.

My son had his 6-250 rechambered to the 6MMSLR and I bought him a set of 6XC Forrester BR dies ($55)and we put a shim under the die an it works great. I do the same thing with my Tubbs 6XC dies for my rifle. I don't recall the exact size but I think its the shim used for dies when loading a 44 mag with 44special dies or 357 to 38 something like that anyway. I could measure it and tell you for sure. So the dies don't have to cost you $200.

The 6SLR has a bit more case capacity than the 6/250.
Also more shoulder angle than the 6/250..
The 6/250 has a tiny bit longer neck, but not by much..

Using the 6XC die, can the full length resizing be accomplished? As I have the Redding 308 body die, would I have a complete full length resizing by using the 308 body die first then shimmed 6XC die? Please let us know what shim size you are using. Also, which seater are you using? Thanks.

If I could elaborate a bit more on my proposed loading setup when I get my 6SLR, it will revolve around dies I already have.

Shoulder push with a Redding 6XC body die.

Neck sizing with a Redding 6BR neck bushing die.

Full length sizing with a .308 RCBS Competition die with the decapping stem removed.

Bullet seating with a .243 RCBS Competition die.

Quite a conglomeration of dies. If they give me the accuracy I want I may not buy a dedicated 6SLR set.

johara1..........tried that source with no success. Something about the Canadian border. Odd, because I buy Redding dies from Sinclair all the time.

Bill, I don't understand that, maybe Robert can tell you why. I have one and it makes life simple,i still use a Forster FL XC die to use first because i turn the necks and have a bullet seater made from the reamer....jim

I got a Barnard S action, Mcmillian Edge Hunting stock, bullets has been ordered (Berger 115gr, both hunting and target), dies and reamer will not be a problem. I only need a 7.5 twist barrel! Can any tells me who would ship barrel to New Zealand? :)

Whats wrong with True Flite?

They do not make 7.5 twist in 6mm. As a matter of fact, my F Class rifle has a True Flite barrel and it shooting extremely well. Another rifle, for FTR has just been completed also has a True Flite barrel too. So, anyone knows anyone who would ship barrel to NZ?
