thinking about a 22lr rifle - have around

I am thinking about buying a 22lr rifle to "just have around" had a 63, 69a and sold them, also a Rem 100 ,

have now a 504 and a marlin youth single shot for my grandchildren.

suggestions please, just plinking and what ever.

Bob

I wanted a 22 LR rifle a few years ago.. And I have bought several to give my kids over the years.. I ended up with a Winchester Wildcat. Yup It's made in Russia, by Tula I believe, but it is a tack driver.. Literally. With match ammo it is a 1 holer at 50 yds.. I bought the target model, but there is a plain Jane model as well.. I also have a Browning BR22 that I have had around for 40 years.. It is a tack driver as well, and I have never touched the sights.. I bought it for #1 son, but his wife doesn't like guns and he lives in the big city.

For cheap the Marlins are pretty good..

Pick a price point Savage, Ruger, CZ, Annie.

All too true.

I like my Anschutz but don't plink with it. It weighs a ton. You can go anywhere from $230 to north of $4000.

I would also suggest that whatever you do, purchase new. You might otherwise wind up with someone else's problem child.

..nope, no mention of 10/22..

There's plenty of budget priced used Marlin bolt actions around, or you can't go wrong with a CZ.

I have no hesitation buying a used 22 bolt, they are hard to hurt, and any real problem usually shows itself in obvious lack of care.

Like what was said above, pick your budget and start poking around the shops for used.

Hardly the best 22 rifle to buy, but you might want to consider a Marlin 22 XT, a bolt action rifle. Decent accuracy and relatively low priced.....around $180, leastways that is what I paid for mine.

thanks for the input, question

have any of you tried the Marlin 795, Bass Pro is asking $160
I grew up wearing out a 39a

To me, plinking means playful shooting at reactive targets. The old favorite is "dancing" the beverage can. Pumps, levers and autoloaders score high on the giggle meter.

If it's just because, I'd say keep an eye out for one of the older Mossbergs. They could be had in tube or mag fed, depending on the model, and can still be found for a pretty good price watching the paper & gun shops. I've got a model 340K that I wouldn't part with, and I've owned 2 model 44's in the past (and I'll have another before it's over). The older Mossy's have that "warm" feeling to them that just can't be bought new. Yep, I am partial, too :).

i am closing in on the Marlin 60, or 795,

the tube mag has some advantages, no spares needed.

any thoughts

Re: marlin 60 or any tube fed- You can get a Spee-D-Loader for about $25. Load before you leave home- 8 tubes worth and then just pour out into the tube feed when rifle is empty.

As to the rifle, fine for plinking, a bear to completely strip down and completely clean. Actually, not a bear but a complete PITA. There are a million springs in there.

You might get lucky with a 10/22©®™ where tolerances actually stack in your favor, or maybe not. If you don’t mind spending four times over for outstanding quality with MOA or better potential, check out Kidd.

You can have my Marlin '92 which is a newer version of the 1892. It has been restored to a beautiful rifle. I did not do the work. Selling for $525.00

Why not a 513t or any older match rifle that sell for decent prices if you look. I see nothing wrong with a 10/22 as they have so much to offer when it comes to customizing. If you could find a marlin 7000t which was a heavy barrel target type auto loader. A marlin levermatic or a 39a is a great little gun too.

I own 5 CZ rifles and they are all great shooters. Cz rifles are well built. I own one Anschutz 1907 and it will beat all the CZs'. Depends on what you are wanting spend.
