thiniking about what i want to rebarrel to....220beggs? 22br? 222? 223ai?

right now I have a factory rem sps tactical that i had rechambered to 223ai... i've got a few thousand rounds down the tube and have had a lot of fun with the gun....but I think I'll be ready to rebarrel after the summer shooting season is over.

I have enough .224 bullets that I think i'd like to stick with them....i'm gonna save 1000 52gr SMK's at an absolute minimum, and probably keep a 1000 or so 50gr z-max's in hand as well. My local walmart has the tendency to get 53gr smk's in frequently as well...So there's my bullet...

Powder I'm not over stocked on anything...but have been running RL10x in my 223AI lately.....have some WC844 and AR-comp laying around, as well... Powder is really really easy to get around here...so that's rather moot. Same with primers, I have more than enough to shoot out whatever barrel I get.

The first issue that comes up is, of course, my .223 bolt face. Now, i'm not opposed to getting that changed...i hate the factory rem extractor anyways and how it tears up brass. So...we can call that moot as well.

I've been thinking about a few calibers... namely a 220beggs, 22br, 222, or sticking with a 223ai. I'm gonna have to buy dies if i do anything other than the 223ai..so that's fine. I don't want to turn necks, so whatever i get MUST be a no-turn neck. I might step into that later...but, not right now.

I'll only be shooting 100-200yds with this rifle...and will be doing that from the bench. I have a private range...and that's where 99.9% of my shooting will happen...and it will be ALL informal. I'm changing out my Bobby Hart stock to a shehane laminate and will most likely do a 1" straight contour for the barrel. My cowan rest ships next week as well.... Oh, I will also be shooting suppressed...not sure how that would matter, but just putting it out there. I get sick of wearing hearing protection, lol.

So.....what say you? Do a no-turn 220 beggs with a 1:14 barrel and stock up on 8208? Do a 22br? Bring it back old school with a 222?? Stick to what I am setup for with the 223ai?

If you do the 220 Beggs, Which is a great cartridge by the way, I wouldn't stock up on 8208! I would get LT 32, 322, maybe even 4198,
Mark

I'm waiting on my 220 Beggs. It will be a plaything for plinking. I'm planning on using H4198. I have some LT32 coming and I have a lot of 8208XBR and some of the old 8208. I have about 1000 Cheek 52 grain bullets and the same amount of Barts. Wood stock should be done in about 60days.

Jon,
It is the 220 Russian with the radius changed from the shoulder neck juncture. This is to keep the brass from lengthening. It has the same case capacity as the .100 short 22ppc.

I'd go with the 22BR with a .254 neck...a 'no turn' neck deal. For a bolt, get a Kiff (PTG) bolt and sell or save your factory .378 face one. For a barrel, I'd opt one twisted 1:12.

Good shootin'. -Al

To me the only advantage is it has enough powder capacity for larger bullets if you have a fast twist barrel. I believe it is over powder capacity for 52Grn bullets.
Al, that is just my opinion.

GRS, going back to your post - you indicate no more than 200yds and informal shootin for your pleasure.

so all the conversation for heavier bullets is unnecessary as they do not provide any significant benefit until 300-+ yds and wind etc.

the fact is your 222 bolt face is fine. you can, as i have - go to a Sako extrator and eliminate the case damage. i have don this on small bolt face and large and they are great cost about $110.

as to caliber, the 222, 223, 223AI are fine ( i question the need for AI at this range) the PPC proved it outshoots the 222 but again you are not competeting, and the 22BR is right there with lots of good benefits. HOWEVeR,case, die and powder volume use in the ppc and 22br are again unnecessary at the range you are shooting, the brass is another question, where you can get lots of good 222, 223, cheep less powder and very acceptable accurcy.

Bob,
I agree with you for the most part, but I would never use a Sako extractor. They are just too dangerous. If you feel it needs to be changed, use the M16.
Dave Kiff sells both, but recommends the M16. I believe the 220Russian(Beggs) has about the same powder capacity as the 223 and you can get much better brass.

i have a bunch of 223 brass...500 new winchester brass...i'm doing groups of 100 for fireforming...but, I just want a different caliber is all. I've got my AR to shoot my 223 stuff....and just wanna change it up.

GSR - Butch is right on the PPC powder volume, and if you want to change away for the 223, the the PPC is a great choice, very accurate and easy to work up loads. i have never had a problem with my Sako extractor in 40x pd rifle 221, lots of use no failure.

the 22br is great, accurate but 29-30 gr of powder to shoot 200 non competetive is not my idea of fun.

Bob

Bob, I've heard of many accidents with the Sako extractor. I don't know if you know Pat Byrne(Benchrest Hall of Fame). Pat had one come down the raceway and covered his face with powder and debris. The extractor went through a piece of metal trim. His face cleared up in about a week. The problem is his girlfriend(Vicki). Vicki is left handed. That extractor would have gone through her eye into her brain. Pat is not lacking in commonsense or brains. He replaced every bolt that he had that were equipped a Sako extractor.
I'm speaking 220Russian(Beggs) not the PPC.

Not to change subject but in ref to Sako vs m16 I had a M16 extractor do the same thing you described, peppered my face with hot partials of powder!!! I think if you could trace most of the failures you would find some sort of operator error in loading or head spacing etc, regardless of how good of shooter or how much experience! Non of us like to admit , maybe we screwed up! JVON
