Thin handle cleaning rod

Gents,

I’m having a hard time cleaning my barrel with a foundation stock. I’m having to lift the handle up over the the butt of the rifle, which flex’s the rod. Is there a cleaning rod that has a thinner profile handle with more clearance?

Cheers.

This is a common issue, but the fix is easy. And it is important to fix it. You want the rod to travel straight through the bore without angling it to accommodate too short a rod with too fat a handle.

Bore Tech makes high quality rods with thin handles. However, it is worthwhile to read their instructions on how to select a proper length rod. See post # 6 above.

The one issue I have with Dewey rods is their "fat" handle. I solved that problem by filing down the handle so one side is flat and slides over the stock without touching it. However, this is not the optimum fix. Post # 6 is in my opinion and mirrors Bore Tech's guidelines for selecting a proper length rod.

Isn't amazing DEWEY has not downsized the od of their handles? No more more DeWEY'S for me; Have two 1 stainless and one coated both have bend and don't clear the comb of the stock.

What he said and I'll add a recommendation for Bore Tech Rods. Also, stay away from solid carbon rods, they just aren't rigid enough (especially in smaller diameters).
The only thing I don't like about the BoreTech rods is the Female end id made out of brass and if you even look at them wrong they bend and you cant get a brush or jag in them. I bought 2 from different dealers and both had damaged ends when I received them. The next one I ordered when I was untagging it it slipped out of the box and the end hit the floor and it was done! Never bought another.

In my opinion, the handle issue notwithstanding, they still make a high-quality coated rod in the sense that I never had one deform or the had the coating abraded after hundreds of cleaning cycle.

As I said, I was able to adapt my existing rods to a 26" varmint barrel by filing down one side of the handle to a flat surface so that the handle sled over the comb of the stock without touching it. Not the ideal fix but it worked.

If I ever need to replace my Dewey's, I will order a longer rod, but I am not walking away from them. Probably a moot point since at my age my rods will probably outlast me. ;)

The longer the rod- the more it's going to flex and if you replace brushes regularly -even a well saturated brush- offers a lot of resistance. I can think of a few venues in SR BR where cleaning with long rods created a cluster by blocking traffic through the aisles between cleaning stations.
