Units prices are very broad, you will need to have a cost limit to help limit the field. And shooting/identification range idea.
I have an AGM rattler varmint. Love it. All things have limitations.
I just use it for pest control.

Look at Rix either Leap(traditional 30mm rings) or the Storm line. And the K3 scanner, yes you want to scan/look separate from rifle(way less movement even at night). 5 year warranty.
Why would you want a scanner ?? just more crap to drag along ?
If you are using a tripod ...
BUY a Oneleaf MT 1000 and get a 640 with a superior LRF and ballistics app
and .... you get superior lenses that are swappable from 30 mm all the way to 75mm
up to 40x .
and drum roll....
You can attach a Tablet or your phone to you tripod and scan all day long without
even looking through the thermal ...
did I mention it's under 2g ?

The Rix DBH D6 (640) and now the D12 (1280 rez) are probably the most popular. They are liked for for using (2) 18650 generic batteries vs dedicated factory battery packs like those used on the iray, agm or pulsar. They also have excellent LRF. A scanner is handy. I use mine more out the window of my truck with LRF. A wider view helmet mounted option is my preference on a stand. Hands free scanning is really nice. flip it up and go to the gun on a tripod. The Rix Stride is well liked on a helmet.
Find a local dealer and go look through all of them. The better dealers will get you set up right.

You can spend a fair amount, or ALOT, for a thermal. I would recommend both a weapon mounted sight and a scanner.
The tough thing about night hunting is that when it is really dark, you have absolutely no broad situational awareness without scanning. Scanning with a weapon on a tripod only works for a narrow field. If calling or stalking it is not uncommon to have animals come from multiple directions, and you WILL miss them. Even with some moonlight this is difficult.
Ranging is practically impossible too, hence I would highly recommend either the scanner or sight having some type of LRF. Do know that some states prohibit a laser emitting device on a weapon and these would be illegal. Another option is a standalone weapon mounted LRF w/ballistic calculator, IE a Vortex, Maztech, MARS, etc.
I have Trijicon and N-Vision products. Despite apparently similar specs to other 640 units, the BAE cores in these have handily outperformed the other brands being used in terms of detection range and definition. These include ATN, Pulsar, and Bering.
I don't have experience with the other Chinese thermal brands, nor can I comment on their reliability.

AGM, Infiray, Rix. Bering, are good. Look for the best warranties 3to5 year's, not less.

I have bought and sold many thermal scopes and monoculars over the past 5 years, earlier this week I received a DNT hydra 650r to play with. I ordered it a couple weeks ago and thought I would try it out and see how it actually is and then maybe pass it along, that way I can speak from experience.
For under 3k easily and they do have discounts for multiple professions. So for about 2700$ I got this shipped. It is a 640 core sensor with good specs all around. Has lrf and ballistics, it has a small footprint, 18650 batteries, and looks dam good.
Last night I took it to the range and sighted in quickly at 50 then 100 for zero. I and another veteran buddy took turns shooting shots 1 each at 200, then 300 and then the furthest we could at the range 316 yards all from tripod/ standing. The ballistics were perfect, the image was great, and the menue is easy enough to navigate as ling as you know the buttons.
After having n-vision halo lr(640), iray bolt v2 (640), agm micro(384), rix l6 (640) and seen many others as well as many monoculars 384 and 640's, I would say for 2700$ this thing is a hell of optic with all the bells and whistles and that price. Not to say i wouldn't want to try some other 640 flavors higher in price and even play with the 1024's, 1240's, but for now this one can do some work. Will be going out Saturday evening and night.

I continually point that out.
You spend 99% of your time scanning, which is tough to do with your scope.
And forget about trying to scan with your scope hand held, then try get it mounted on the gun before things go south.
