The Triple Crown of Rimfire

The Triple Crown of Rimfire is schedule for the week of 25 thur 30 May 2021.

I would like to make a proposal to change the IR 50/50 portion of the Triple Crown from the three targets of IR 50/50 Unlimited, to three targets of IR 50/50 10 shot scoring.

The IR 50/50 "unlimited" portion has always been the most feared portion of the Triple Crown. If one has one bad shot it drops his overall score tremendously.

I don't think anyone has ever won the Triple Crown that shot a 749 agg. on the IR 50/50 portion. It is simply the nature of the IR 50/50 unlimited scoring system.

On the other hand the 10 Shot scoring system rewards absolute accuracy without penalizing one or two bad shots just as ARA and PSL does.

In addition the 10 Shot scoring system allows one to come back from a poor target by having so much upside for an outstanding performance.

This is not my original idea. Bill Calfee came up with it.

I feel so strongly that it will improve the Triple Crown I'm advocating here.

Paul Tolvstad and Jason Frymier are in a position to affect this change.

If you support this idea please respond here. Maybe we can convince Paul and Jason it is time for a change.

The very nature of calling something "The Triple Crown," denotes that it is meant to be the toughest of the tough. The competition is meant to be hard. Changing it now would detract from the hard earned prestige of those who have already won this title. Lower the standards and it becomes less that it was intended to be, to start with.

I absolutely agree lowering the standard would be a injustice to the history of the Triple Crown and to all those that shot the previous matches.

But changing the IR 50/50 portion to the 10 shot rules would in fact make the competition one of pure accuracy rather than having the luck (or unluck) factor of the IR 50/50 Unlimited scoring system.

It would also ensure each portion of the Triple Crown is weighed equally. As it is now a miss on the IR 50/50 unlimited targets has a much greater impact on your overall finish than a miss on the ARA or PSL targets.

The fact is no one has ever, and maybe never will shoot perfect scores on all 9 targets. If your miss happens on the the IR 50/50 targets you will drop 6-10 positions in your overall standings. A dropped shot on the ARA or PSL targets it will not have the same effect.

The IR 50/50 10 shot scoring system was not introduced until after the Triple Crown was created. If it had been available earlier it may have been selected to be the IR 50/50 portion.

All competitions have their downfalls. If anyone could be perfect what would be the purpose of the competition in the first place. Every competition has a degree of luck attached to it. The losers will cry bad luck and the winners will note that they suffered no bad luck. If you miss a shot, your score should drop. People usually don't like rules eased unless they lack the skills to win.

Nick I respect your desire not to continue debating this issue, but may I ask one more response from you.

I want to completely understand your position and have insight into your understanding of the proposal. It will have an impact on my future efforts to push the proposal.

If you suck on the ARA and PSL portions....well the 50/50 really don't matter at that point!
